WELCOME TO IXTAPA - ZIHUATANEJO !

Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are two very different Mexican cities located within 20 minutes of each other on Mexico's jungled western coast, about two hours north of Acapulco. Although both cities share a common airport, 340 days of sunshine each year, and the lush backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountains, that is where most of the similarities end.

Zihuatanejo was the first of the two towns to become established in this neck of the Mexican coastline. The large and protected natural harbor was the perfect location for a port and fishing village, and the history of this bay is varied and colorful. Before the Spanish colonized Mexico this large bay was used as a beach retreat by the Tarascan kings who lived nearby. Although most of the tourist shops, markets and restaurants remain near the water, the town itself has escaped the confines of the bay and the sprawl has eeked into the nooks and crannies of the nearby hills. Still, Zihuatanejo offers a charm very much unlike it's nearby neighbor, especially along the southwestern shores of its harbor.

Ixtapa is located north of Zihuatanejo, up the coast about 5 miles. Designed by the Mexican government and Fonatur as a tourist destination, Ixtapa looks more like a modern Mexican resort than it's southern neighbor. High rise hotels line the beachfront while a host of restaurants and bars catering to tourists front the main street. Most of the action is within walking distance of the hotels. Don't expect a town square, this is a resort, not a Mexican town or village.

No journey to this region of Mexico would be complete without a visit to both seaside towns. Most tourists stay in Ixtapa, and then head over to Zihuatanejo for a daily excursion of shopping and sightseeing. Those looking for more of the original flavor of Mexico often choose to stay in Z-wat, making excursions over to Ixtapa to take advantage of the various creature comforts that prevail in the Tourist Zone.

Ready to drink your welcome margarita in one of the most beautiful locations on Mexico's Pacific Coast? Catch a boat and head over to Las Gatas Beach. This spectacular piece of paradise is tucked into the southwest corner of Zihuatanejo Bay. You'll have to take a short boat ride from the pier or the marina to get there, but once you arrive you won't want to leave. Lucky for you the Las Gatas Beach Club and Bungalows has a room with your name on it! For further information drop them a line at owensbungalows@yahoo.com.

This special beach has been compared to an island in the south Pacific by more than one seasoned traveler. Watch for falling coconuts!

Looking for an adventure but don't want to stray too far from the security of your hotel? Try a half day adventure to Ixtapa Island! This Island is located just a short distance from shore at the north end of Ixtapa, directly offshore from the Club Med. The island offers several different beaches, each beach specializing in a different type of fun! There are two beaches that specialize in restaurants, one beach that hosts excellent snorkeling, and yet another for those who like the idea of running around on a Pacific Island with no clothes on. Take your pick! The boat ride from shore is fairly inexpensive, and after several hours here you will feel like you have taken your vacation to the next level. Enjoy!

Like most coastal resorts in Mexico, beaches are the name of the game in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Wide and full of beautiful sand, most of these beaches are perfect for relaxing, water sports, or just pulling up a good book.

The water temperature at Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo beaches is swimmable all year long. The water temperature tops out in the 80's during the late summer and fall months, and drops to the low 70's during late winter and early spring.

Check out the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Ixtapa.

For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo.

Finding something to do at the beach is usually not a problem. Beach rentals, excursions, watersports and restaurants are available at most area beaches!

We have organized this section of Mexico Expo into two different sections.

Ixtapa Beaches   and   Zihuatanejo Beaches

Both areas offer beautiful beaches, each with a different flair. While Ixtapa beaches face the open Pacific Ocean and wave activity, the protected waters of Zihuatanejo Bay are usually very calm!

IXTAPA BEACHES

The three miles of beaches at Ixtapa are classic Mexican Beaches! Large beaches with plenty of sand, these playas also offer just enough wave action to give you a reason to go in the water. Since most of the hotel rooms in the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo resort area are located in the Ixtapa area, these beaches are the most widely visited.

Ixtapa beaches are subject to some degree of wave activity during certain times of the year, however the the sea is relatively calm and perfect for swimming most of the time.

From north to south:

  • PLAYA LINDA

Located at the north end of Ixtapa, just past Playa Quieta.
A palm-lined beach with little commercial activity.
Palapa restaurants nearby offer fresh seafood.
Horseback riding is usually available from several caballeros!

  • IXTAPA ISLAND

Located one half mile offshore from Playa Linda.
This island paradise offers several delicious beaches, one for each pleasure.
Playa Coral is great for snorkeling, Playa Cuachalalate has several in-the-sand restaurants, plus there is an un-named beach for those who would rather not wear clothes. We can call this Playa Carlos Fiesta!
Boat rides from Playa Linda take about 10 minutes and the cost is inexpensive.

  • PLAYA QUIETA

Located towards the north end of Ixtapa, with access on either side of the Club Med.
A long, wide and beautiful beach perfect for watersports.
Since this beach is frequented by guests of the kid-friendly Club Med Ixtapa you can expect a fair number of children playing on this beach during the day.

  • PUNTA IXTAPA

Located on the rocky peninsula that separates Playa Quieta from the marina.
Although there is a hidden beach or two on this point, the primary use of this coastline is snorkeling. A residential development has been built at the north end of this peninsula.

  • ISLA DE LA PIE

Located offshore, just slightly removed from Punta Ixtapa.
Accessible by foot at low tide, or by wading at medium tide.
A good location for bird watching!

  • PLAYA PALMAR

Located directly in front of the large hotels in the main tourist area of Ixtapa.
This long and wide beach is always full of activity because of the number of tourists staying in the hotels. Ocean swimming is safe much of the time. The surf can get large and dangerous at times, and when it does it's best to stay on the beach and let nature do her thing.

  • PLAYA VISTA HERMOSA

Located at the southeast end of Ixtapa after Playa Palmar, before Zihuatanejo.
Beautiful scenery, and gorgeous beach, and lots of rock formations.
Although much of this beach features large rocks and crashing waves, there are also parts that are protected and good for swimming.

  • PLAYA LARGA

Located between town and the airport, south east of all the tourist activity.
A good place to grab a bite to eat on the beach and relax!
Several quaint restaurants, some with swimming pools.
    Accessible by car or bus.

  • PLAYA MANZANILLO

Located about 2.5 miles south of the Point Garrobo Lighthouse.
A quiet protected cove with white sand and clear shallow water.
Good location for snorkel excursions! Accessible by boat only.

ZIHUATANEJO BEACHES

Zihuatanejo beaches are different that Ixtapa, but just as beautiful! Because of the natural protected harbor, there is very little wave activity at most Z-wat beaches. You will find that the further you head away from the main municipal area of the bay at the north end, the nicer the water becomes.

Out at the furthest point near Las Gatas beach the water is crystal clear and looks a lot like the waters of Tahiti!

  • PLAYA PRINCIPAL

Located right in front of the oceanfront shopping area in downtown Zihuatanejo.
This is Zihuatanejo's main beach (although not it's best!).
Locals love this beach for sunbathing and swimming. Tourists quite often head a bit further south where it's not so crowded.

  • PLAYA MADERA

Located about half way down the bay towards Playa Las Gatas.
Another nice beach frequented more by locals than by tourists.
Above the beach on Madera Hill there are restaurants and hotels with spectacular views of the bay.

  • PLAYA LA ROPA

Located towards the southeast end of Zihuatanejo Bay, before Playa Las Gatos.
A very popular tourist beach with a good selection of beachfront restaurants.
Watersport rentals are available here for those who just gotta get wet!

  • PLAYA LAS GATAS

Located at the very end of Zihuatanejo Bay, out by the point.
Honey, I'm home. If you are looking for the ideal South-Pacific or Blue-Lagoon location to picnic, snorkel or just read a good book... this is the place. Beachfront palapas and restaurants, beach rentals and a really good beachfront hotel make this as much of a destination as an excursion.
Carlos Fiesta gives this beach a 5-Starfish rating!

  • PLAYA LARGA

Located south east of Zihuatanejo Bay out of town.
A large, mostly empty beach just waiting for you, a sack lunch, and a bottle of Cuervo!

Both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo offer a variety of tourist accommodations. Most visitors to the area stay in Ixtapa, although the small town village of Zihuatanejo might be preferable for those looking for a less "touristy" local.

Our hotel guide is broken down into two categories, one for each location.

IXTAPA AREA HOTELS   and   ZIHUATANEJO AREA HOTELS

IXTAPA HOTELS

Most of the oceanfront luxury hotels in Ixtapa are located on the two mile long beach called El Palmar. This beach is only 4 miles away from Zihuatanejo, but distinctly different in flavor. Most of the hotels here are large and quiet large, and offer many vacation-friendly amenities.

The majority of these hotels are first class, so you can expect your room to be pretty darn nice. Still, don't expect Four Seasons Hotel quality... remember, you are in Mexico. Go with the flow and enjoy it!

ZIHUATANEJO HOTELS

Staying in a hotel in Zihuatanejo is a different experience than staying in Ixtapa. While Ixtapa offers the more exacting "master plan" hotel zone feeling that many Americans expect and enjoy, Zihuatanejo is a more genuine Mexican town and includes all of the flavors that go with the local culture.

There's lots to do in Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo, and most of it is outdoors. We'll give you a chance to sleep in...after all this is your vacation. But try to keep the in-room horizontal channel-surfing to a minimum! You can do that when you get back home. Just a few of your choices include:

If you are going to be jumping the water while you are in town check out the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Ixtapa.

DIVING

Warm water diving is always fun! Although the diving on the main beaches is not that great, there are several nearby locations up and down the coast that are good. If you get too lazy to scuba while in town, at least go out for a fun snorkel adventure!

FISHING

Fishing in the waters off of Ixtapa - Zhuatanejo is usually very good. Although these waters can be productive for large game fish, there's lots more going on here as well.

Much of fishing revolves around water temperatures. In the Ixtapa area the warmer waters peak out in the 85 degree range in late summer. Not so coincidentally this is hurricane season, which is caused by the warm waters. However the "Chubascos" as they are called in Mexico rarely come as a surprise, and most of the year they don't come at all!

As the fall and winter months draw near the water cools to the 70's, which is still pretty enticing for our gilled bubble-blowing friends!

Most fishing excursions start pretty early in the morning, and can wrap up just after lunch time. Many fishing excursions include a small lunch and sodas to hold you over. If you want to have cold beer to nurse while fishing it's acceptable to bring your own!

Fishing packages to Ixtapa can also be arranged with CASS TOURS and REEL ONE IN. Check out their web sites!

For more information on fishing in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo drop by the IXTAPA SPORTFISHING web site.

SAILING

Ixtapa and it's wonderfully protected harbor are a natural stopping point for cruising the Mexican coastline, or as a stopover for bluewater sailing to Hawaii or the South Pacific!

Sailors looking for a good "head's up" on Mexican waters have at least two good books to bring aboard. MEXICO BOATING GUIDE by John and Pat Rains is full of good info, as is CHARLIE'S CHARTS written by Charles Woods. Carlos Fiesta has used both of these books for Mexican sailing adventures and loves 'em both. GERRY CHARTS by good old Gerry is another option.

SIESTAS & OLAS is a very fun film about surfing Mexico. The action in the film starts off with epic Baja at Scorpion Bay, and then transitions to the awesome sliders and bone crunchers of mainland Mexico. The film was produced by Dan-O Surf Films in Santa Barbara, California (by Dan Wosniak), and can be purchased on video and DVD at your local surf shop or by visiting their web site. See it and feel good.

And for a good time on-line drop your Sex Wax and check out the Reef Brazil girls at the REEF web site.

SWELL.COM always has good stuff to check out when you can't go surfing and need your fix.

WINDSURFING

  • The tall mountain backbone behind Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo form a blockade for the more significant Pacific winds. Still, afternoon winds pick up offering moderate windsurfing offshore at Ixtapa. Being more protected, Zihuatanejo Bay doesn't get much wind. For the beginning boardhead these gentle winds can be a a good place to practice on a One Design.

For more consistent windsurfing conditions check out the Baja location of BUENA VISTA.

Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo offers plenty of delicious dining options...everything from casual eateries to elegant and expensive. Don't take the easy way out and eat all of your meals in the hotel you are staying in! Get out there and explore!

Remember half the fun of eating out is the atmosphere. Dining out at places that may seem a bit wild might not be such a bad idea for a change...after all, you're on vacation!

Tipping is appreciated by the waiters and waitresses in Ixtapa and Zijuatanejo, however tips in Mexico are not usually as big as in the U.S. A 10% tip for good service is standard, although leaving a larger tip for excellent service is a good idea.

If you want to spice up your trip with a little nightlife action, the twin towns will not let you down! One of the nice things about partying in Ixtapa is that drinking and driving are easy to avoid. Most of the clubs and bars are just a short cab ride to the hotels!

The drinking age is 18 years old, so inexperienced drinking is not uncommon. It's usually a good idea not to get too snockered while doing the town, as the recovery time the next morning can waste a lot of your valuable vacation time. Moderation is a great idea that works!

For Ixtapa travelers looking for a bit of evening entertainment the Club Med at the north end of town always has something cooking in the evenings. Since all the beaches in Mexico are open to the public, getting to the Club via the beach is legal. Sneaking from the beach to the stage area? You're on your own!

  • BAY CLUB

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 554-4844.
Located on Playa la Ropa on Zihuatanejo Bay.
Dancing under the stars, fine food, live jazz y mucho mas!

  • CARLOS 'N CHARLIE'S

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 553-2041.
Playa el Palmar s/n next to the Posada Real Hotel.
If you haven't been to a Carlos and Charlie's, you haven't really been to Mexico!
It's a great place to let your hair down and join the fun. The knuckleheads that work here are a trip (that's good!). The later it gets the goofier they become!
If you get there at 5:30 in the morning you can help mop the floors.

  • D'LATINO DISCO CLUB

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 554-2230.

If you like disco and don't mind getting a late start, this place really rocks!

  • EL FARO PIANO LOUNGE

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 553-2090.
Located at the top of the huge lookout tower at the Marina.

    VACATION TIP!

Remember! In Mexico the drinking age is 18 years old. This opens up the "Party World" and drinking to a whole new group of (sometimes) inexperienced drinkers. If you are under 21 and decide to drink in Mexico...take it slow and easy and try to stay sober. Calling your parents to tell them you are stuck in a Mexican jail is a hard phone call to make!

  • CHRISTINE CLUB

Known as "The most beautiful Club in the World", this upstairs dance hall is indeed a special place. Fortunately it's not too classy to have fun. Disco dancing, dirty dancing...even crawling around on the floor is acceptable (if you have a good reason!). If you can't find someone to talk to here maybe you should buy a parrot.

Located at Paseo de Ixtapa, Centro Comercial La Puerta.
Another nutty place from the Anderson Group! Always fun, great food and wonderful people. If you can't have fun here you should go home.
No dancing on the bar until after 9:00 p.m.

  • ZETA'S CLUB

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 553-0457.
Located on Marina Boulevard across the street from the Hotel Riviera.

Large variety of drinks and margaritas!

Don't you dare go home without shopping! If you are staying in Ixtapa and have not yet planned an excursion to Zihuatanejo, this is your chance to plan a nice little visit to the wonderful shops on the bay!

If you get too busy laying on the beach while on vacation and forget to shop, you can always make your last shopping run at the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Airport. Yes...it lacks the atmosphere of funky old downtown Zihuatanejo, but it's better than coming home empty handed!

Negotiating prices is acceptable with the venders and very small shops. It is generally not common practice in the nicer shops and boutiques. If you decide to try your negotiating skills with a vendor on the street, starting off with an initial offer of one half the asking price is a good practice. They will be even more flexible if you are buying more than one item!

Ixtapa real estate for visitors is mostly along the coast. More visitors each year are discovering how easy and affordable it is to own a piece of paradise! Houses are available near the coast north and south of town, although condos and vacation ownership might be a more convenient way to tap into paradise for most people.

If ownership of the property is not critical, long term leases are another good option for many people.

Check out your options and don't buy anything on your first trip to town!

There's a lot to be said for relaxing poolside for a few days, but don't forget you are in a unique location that you may not be visiting again for a while. While in town you might want to check out these areas of local interest.

  • ALMACEN FOOTBRIDGE

The Almacen Footbridge has finally been replaced by a new concrete structure. It was a funky hand made wooden bridge that spanned the inlet connecting Zihuatanejo Bay and the marina basin. It wasn't built to be an attraction, it just turned out that way! Located behind the Naval barracks at the end of Paseo del Pescador by the pier, this wobbly-looking contraption actually provided a much-needed service for those who had to travel from the Bario Almacen or La Noria to get to the central district. Put together with telephone poles and plywood, it did not look very safe, and indeed the bridge has "hit the water" several times over the years. But the locals kept re-building it and the legend continued for years. The government continually threatened to replace it with a substantial footbridge..."manana". Manana has finally arrived.

  • PLAYA LARGA

Even though the beaches in front of the hotels are nice, sometimes it can be fun to get away to another beach. Playa Larga is a fun beach just south of Zihuatanejo Bay, and the perfect place to spend a few hours for lunch on the beach!

  • ZIHUATANEJO MUSEUM

    Telephone 011-52 (755) 554-2343.
Located at the end of Paseo del Pescador on Municipal Beach, near the pier.
Very inexpensive fee allows you a good half-day of learning about the history of the area. Archeological artifacts, sculptures, paintings and more.
    Open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. minus siesta!

Most people don't realize how close Ixtapa is to Mexico's vacation jewel Acapulco. It's about 160 kilometers (100 miles) and an easy three hour drive south of town. The coastal road Highway 200 runs along the coast with the mighty Sierra Madre del Sur mountains along the inland side of the road. The road kisses the coast a few times, but also runs a couple of miles inland much of the way. This can be a great way to get added value out of your vacation peso if you have the time!

For further information on what's happening down south check out the ACAPULCO section of Mexico Expo.

Keeping in touch is getting easier each year in Ixtapa and Zijuatanejo. In addition to the telephones in most of the hotels, there are also public phones and long distance telephone stores in both locations.

Internet access for e-mail is also available in both towns, and the price is very reasonable.

For the new dialing instructions from the United States to Mexico, as well as the new Mexico area codes you can call AT&T at (800) 869-1707 or drop by their Mexico dialing instructions web site at MEXICO DIALING INFO.

Not all of the fun stuff to do in Ixtapa can be categorized in the enclosed sections. So take a gander of some of the other cool things to do while in town!

Also if you are planning on staying in town for a while, think about the option of heading up or down the coast to create your own adventure! Most of the larger hotels have rental car facilities in their lobby, and the rental fees usually include unlimited miles!

PARA-SAILING

Want to get high in Ixtapa? This is the best way to do it. The parasail boats cruise the beach looking for customers on Playa Palmar, Ixtapa's main beach with most of the high-rise hotels. Unlike the parasailing of old where the client was strapped in and took off from the beach (not always safe) the new system takes you out on the boat to launch you from a platform on the rear of the boat. Bring a camera!

SUNSET CRUISES

Sunset cruises are a great way to end the day and start the evening in Ixtapa! Most of these cruises include some form of cocktail and sometimes snacks. To find more information on the closest sunset cruise company to your hotel check with the hotel front desk.

We have designed this section of our Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo Travel Guide to help you with commonly asked questions about this particular part of Mexico. It's always a good idea to sharpen up your learning curve before you start your vacation!

  • Carlos:

We have decided to visit Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo this year, but we don't want to stay in a huge hotel. Any suggestions? - Julie

    Julie;

A nice and off the beaten path place to stay is the Las Gatas Beach Club and Bungalows. This quaint hotel is located on a pristine stretch of beach with great snorkeling, and is the perfect alternative to a large luxury hotel. - Carlos Fiesta

  • Carlos:

We are planning our honeymoon and I have heard that Ixtapa Island is a fun place to visit for an afternoon, but I get seasick very easily. Should I just pass on this excursion? - Bethanny

    Bethanny;

No way! Ixtapa Island is always a fun half day excursion and I highly recommend it. The boat ride from Playa Linda or Playa Quieta is very short (about 10 minutes) and the ocean is usually calm. Go for it! - Carlos Fiesta

  • Carlos;

Friends have told us that the Ixtapa Club Med is good for families. We are a little concerned about bringing our three kids to a Club Med. Your thoughts? - Jeff

    Jeff;

I have been to the Ixtapa Club Med several times and is indeed perfect for families. The environment is set up great for kids to enjoy, with plenty of supervision. Even the evening shows are geared towards family fun! - Carlos Fiesta

  • Carlos;

We want a Mexican destination with plenty of sunshine and minimal rain. We have heard that some Mexican destinations can get rainy. How about Ixtapa? - Mike

    Mike;

Since most of Mexico is in the tropics, most of the Mexican destinations are subject to the tropical weather systems of the eastern Pacific and the western Caribbean. If you want to minimize the chances of rain, travel to Mexico after the "wet" season. You will be much more likely to experience a dry vacation in Mexico if you visit between late October through May. But don't discount the other months in Mexico. Even during the wet season it usually only rains for a few hours in the afternoon with good weather the rest of the day! - Carlos Fiesta

  • Carlos;

Is it necessary to bring or buy pesos when traveling to Ixtapa? Will we get a better rate when shopping with pesos? - Lucy

    Lucy;

Although it wouldn't hurt to bring or buy some pesos for your vacation, it really isn't necessary. Almost all services in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo accept U.S. dollars and many accept credit cards as well. Larger bills such as $50's and $100's can be a problem for many vendors, and even $20's can be a tough call in some of the smaller shops in Zihuatanejo. It's always a good idea to bring along plenty of $1's and $5's. Most exchange rates at the restaurants and shops are pretty competitive, so bringing and paying with pesos will save you some money, but not much. - Carlos Fiesta

Ixtapa ~ Zihuatanejo is located smack-dab in the tropics. This pretty much guarantees you warm weather all year long, and hot weather during the summer months. The rainy season in Ixtapa usually begins in June and runs into October. During this season the weather is nice most of the time, with occasional showers in the late afternoon. These rains usually disappears before sunset, providing great sunsets and pleasant evening temperatures.

During this same time period the possibility of Chubascos exists. Chubasco is the Mexican name for hurricane, and they can form along the coasts of Mexico a couple of times each year. Quite often they do not reach land, and their affect is minimal. When they do occasionally make landfall, they bring very strong winds and heavy rains. With today's advanced weather tools, Chubascos rarely strike without plenty of warning.
