WECOME TO HUATULCO!Where is the last hidden secret on Mexico's Golden Pacific Coast? This is it! Bahias de Huatulco is the most recent tourist destination to be developed by the Mexican Government, and it is truly the jewel of this spectacular coast. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for the good folks in Mexico's tourism department to find a better destination to showcase the beauty and spirit of their country than the incredible 22 miles of bays at Huatulco.Verdant jungles crawl out of the hills to mesh with the spectacular white sand beaches and clear protected coves for miles in all directions. The weather is warm, the sky is clear, and the Pacific Ocean is deliciously warm all year long. Huatulco seems to have everything you might expect in a popular tropical destination...except crowds. And as soon as the world discovers this seaside secret, the crowds won't be far behind. But for now, you'll have much of this stretch of paradise to yourself. Because Huatulco is a relatively new destination, most of the hotels and infrastructure are new as well. Huatulco has the added advantage of having learned from the development mistakes of earlier planned resorts. And the brand new hotels that are still on the drawing board will be some of the best available, making Huatulco one of the newest and nicest resort destinations on the planet. Keeping an eye on the future, and in an effort to make Huatulco more of an eco-friendly destination, the Mexican government has set aside 40,000 of the 52,000 acres in the area as an ecological reserve. As an added step, environmental groups are keeping a close watch on Huatulco and it's tourism progress. With slow development and careful planning, the likelihood is high that Huatulco will be a model for future resort developments in other parts of Mexico and the world. If you like beaches and watersports, you'll love Huatulco. Most of the beaches are located in beautiful bays and are protected from the ocean swells. Sunning, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing await visitors at ever turn. Of course, there's nothing wrong with relaxing poolside with a cold drink for a few hours or days either! Huatulco is quite removed from the pace often experienced at Mexican resorts. There are no timeshare vendors trying to give you a free breakfast, no wet T-shirt contests or Spring Break parties, and if you are dancing until 3:00 in the morning you are probably dancing with yourself. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)! Huatulco offers a great combination of available activities, with the understanding that if you want to relax and do nothing all day ...well that's just fine too. Looking for an exciting destination that will give you well-earned bragging rights at the next social event back home? Huatulco, and the friendly people of the state of Oaxaca, are the answer. Mexico has indeed saved the best for last. If you want to share a good web site or company for Huatulco tourism we would love to hear from you! SUBMIT INFORMATION HERE. Bahia Tangolunda is one of the 9 bays of Huatulco and a center of activity in the area. Playa del Amore is a beautiful stretch of beach with small restaurants overlooking the calm and beautiful bay. This is a good place to pull up a bowl of chips, sip on a cold drink, and decompress into "Mexico Time". As pretty as this beach is remember there are eight additional large bays for you to explore nearby and dozens of beautiful beaches waiting for your footprints in the sand!
Although there are a few things to do inland, most of what Huatulco is all about is along the coast. To expand your enjoyment of the coast beyond the hotel beaches, travelers who want to experience empty and pristine beaches can take a boat over to Playa El Maguey. This gorgeous private cove offers sandy beaches for relaxing, crystal clear waters for snorkeling and the quiet serenity to help you feel like you really got away from it all. Boat rides to El Maguey can be arranged at the front desk of most hotels or by contacting Huatulco Tours at 011-52 (958) 7-0778.
Huatulco consists of 9 spectacular adjacent bays sitting along 22 miles of the blue Pacific Ocean. These bays are protected from the swells in the ocean, so swimming and watersports can be enjoyed all year long! Currently only 3 of the 9 bays have been developed, so there is plenty of empty sand and privacy awaiting your arrival! If you are interested in visiting one of the bays or beaches that are not yet developed or easily accessible, hiring a panga boat to drop you off is the perfect solution. The ocean is warm in Huatulco all year long, even in the middle of winter. Check out the current Huatulco OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE. For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo. The bays, running from north to south:
Because Huatulco is a new resort destination, most of the hotels here are newer, larger and upscale. And because Huatulco is still in the early stages of development, there are only a dozen hotels to chose from. Looking for a wider selection? Come back in 20 years when Huatulco has been completed. At that point Huatulco is expected to offer approximately 20,000 hotel rooms and 2 million annual visitors! Yikes! Enjoy the solitude while you can. Most of the hotels in Huatulco are located right on the beach. There are a few hotels located a bit inland from the ocean, and they tend to be more affordable. Laws dictate that no hotel can be over six stories tall, unlike Acapulco to the north. Looking for a good rate for hotel and air packages to Huatulco? HOTELS ON THE BEACH * HOTELS IN LA CRUCECITA
HOTELS ON THE BEACHThe beaches are where it is happening in Huatulco, and for those who can afford it, staying at a hotel on the beach in Huatulco is paradise!
HOTELS IN LA CRUCECITA
For those who can think of better ways to spend their money than on a luxurious hotel,
Huatulco has a few options located a bit inland, just a few minutes from the beach.
The village of La Crucecita is where many of the local people live who work in the hotels
and in the local construction industry. These hotels tend to be moderately priced, and rooms
are often available without reservations. In addition to a few small hotels La Crucecita also
offers a clean town square, curious shops and some delightful places to eat.
Like many of the locations that Camino Real occupies for their resorts throughout Mexico, the location of the Camino Real Huatulco is superb! Tucked away in a calm cove with long sandy beaches, offshore snorkel reefs, islands and a resort design set up for pure pleasure there is no way a person can stay here and not have a great time. Even those who just want to relax and pass on all the fun stuff available at the resort will appreciate this special corner or paradise! For more information drop by the CAMINO REAL HUATULCO web site.
Huatulco offers great recreational opportunities, both in and out of the water. In the humid summer months, it's a good idea to plan your inland recreation (such as golf) in the morning, and then head for the ocean or pool as the day warms up! If you are planning on going in the water check out the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Huatulco. Drop by THE LOG website for additional information on marina facilities in Mexico! For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo.
FISHING * GOLFING * HORSEBACK RIDING
KAYAKING * SCUBA DIVING * SNORKELING
SURFING * TENNIS * HIKING
FISHINGFishing is good in the warm waters off of Huatulco, and these waters are not overloaded
with fishermen. That's a good formula for tight lines! Sailfish are common in these
waters, including black and blue marlin. Dorado, wahoo and other good fighting fish are
also found in good numbers. As with many parts of the fishing world, catch and release
is common here, and will help allow the fishing population to grow in the future.
Fishing trips can be arranged at the activities desks at most of the larger hotels,
and also by heading down to the marina for a first hand look a the boats and skippers.
GOLFINGHuatulco offers duffers and pros a great venue for golf. The greens are well maintained
and present a good challenge.
For more information on golf packages to Huatulco check with the folks at BEST GOLF.
HORSEBACK RIDINGThere are several places in the Huatulco area where horses can be rented. Several of these locations are near the beaches, and some of them are inland.
KAYAKINGBoth fresh water and salt water kayaking is available in the Huatulco area.
Ocean kayaking is spectacular all along the 9 bays of Huatulco. The water is
generally calm in the bays, and the ocean is clear and warm. Bringing along a
mask and snorkel is an excellent way to add depth to a kayak adventure.
Because of the tall mountains behind Huatulco and the rain that falls from
June through September, river kayaking is also available in Huatulco!
SCUBA DIVINGThere are several excellent places in the bays of Huatulco where certified divers
can explore underwater reefs, caves, and more than just a few fish.
The water temperature is warm all year long, and actually very
warm in summer (90 degrees!).
For more information on Scuba Diving adventures in Mexico and other locations visit the web site of GOOD TIME IN THE WATER.
SNORKELINGSnorkeling is a favorite past time in Huatulco! The water is so warm and clear that it is hard to stay on shore. And for those "Type A" behavior people who always have to have something to do, exploring the ocean through a mask and snorkel almost seems productive!
SURFINGThere are several good breaks near Huatulco, many of
them are located to the north. The coast faces south here, so southern hemi's
and tropical storms make summer and fall surfing the best. No wetsuits all year!
Visit HORIZONS WEST for information on surf expeditions north of Puerto Vallarta.
Also located on the mainland north of P.V. is COSTA AZUL surf resort, a great place for surfers looking for a relaxed surfing environment.
Drop in on the web site of SURFARIMEX for additional information on surf tours into Mexico!
SIESTAS & OLAS is a very fun film about surfing Mexico. The action in the film starts off with epic Baja at Scorpion Bay, and then transitions to the awesome sliders and bone crunchers of mainland Mexico. The film was produced by Dan-O Surf Films in Santa Barbara, California (by Dan Wosniak), and can be purchased on video and DVD at your local surf shop or by visiting their web site. See it and feel good.
And for a good time on-line drop your Sex Wax and check out the Reef Brazil girls at the REEF web site.
SWELL.COM always has good stuff to check out when you can't go surfing and need your fix.
Leave your wet suit at home and grab your rash guard. The OCEAN TEMPERATURES in Mexico are nice all year long!
Starting from the south:
TENNISMany of the larger hotels in Huatulco offer tennis, including the Barcelo Huatulco Hotel, Camino Real, Gala Resort, Magni Hotel Suites and the Club Med. Also there are courts available at the Golf Course.
HIKINGHikers will love the Huatulco area. In addition to the
miles of beautiful beach areas, there are hundreds of square miles of jungle and
coffee plantations up in the hills behind Huatulco.
The higher up one hikes, the greener and thicker the vegetation becomes.
Streams and waterfalls also become more common at these higher elevations.
Huatulco offers authentic Mexican cuisine plus a host of additional culinary choices.
Hotel restaurants are an option and usually quite good, but half the fun of visiting a
new destination is getting out and exploring the local eateries.
A word on tipping. Waiters always appreciate gratuity on the bill, but some tourists
are uncertain as to how much of a tip to leave. Usually a tip of 10% of the total bill is
a good tip. This is less than some places in the U.S., where tipping 10% to 20% of the bill
is normal. Of course leaving a tip larger than 10% is appreciated in Mexico, especially if
the food and service were exceptional.
There's no question about it...Mexicans love to party!
Even in a more reserved setting such as Huatulco! Combine the Mexican's love
for music and dancing with the Gringo's (and Gringa's) desire to get out and
get down and you have a formula destined for evening fun. Remember, in
Mexico even 18 year olds can party! The nightlife here is fun, but a few steps
behind the insanity of Cabo and Cancun.
Even though Huatulco does have it's night spots, and you can dance until 3:00 in
the morning, don't expect the rest of the city to be waiting up for you when you
finally decide to head back to your hotel. You may, or may not, be able to find a
taxi driver or taco stand that shares your enthusiasm for such late hours. As with
many things on vacation, a little planning goes a long way.
The larger hotels are also a nightlife option. They all have bar areas, and some of
them offer 2 for 1 Happy Hours just to prime the pump!
For a nearby evening excursion of fun take a cab to the nearby town of Santa Cruz.
Shopping options are increasing each year, but the choices are limited compared to other large Mexican resorts. There are four different places to shop in the Huatulco area, two of them being nearby villages and 2 small areas near the beaches of Huatulco. In addition to these shopping areas, most of the hotels in Huatulco have shops and boutiques with a variety of goods. However don't expect bargain prices at the hotels, the convenience is what you are paying for. For last minute shoppers there are a few small but surprisingly diverse shops at the Huatulco airport. All of the shops in the Huatulco area accept U.S. dollars, as well as pesos. The nicer shops take Master Card, Visa, and some take American Express, Discover Card and traveler's checks. If you are planning on paying with U.S. dollars, it's a good idea to bring small bills, as some of the shops may have trouble providing change for larger bills. Visit the web site of JOHN RAMOS to review his unique and colorful Mexico art work.
LA CRUCECITA * SANTA CRUZ * BAHIA TANGOLUNDA
LA CRUCECITALocated one mile inland between Santa Cruz and Tagolunda bays, the residential community of La Crucecita is where the locals live who work to support the tourism in the area. The town was built in 1986 and continues to grow as the resort of Huatulco grows. Souvenir shops, jewelry stores, Oaxaca handicrafts, pharmacies and much more can be found near their town square. After spending time hanging around the pool and the beach, this is a fun place to wander around to taste the flavor of the local people.
SANTA CRUZBahia Santa Cruz was the original fishing settlement in the Huatulco area dating back hundreds of years. Today's visitors will find plenty of activity in this quaint seaside town, including a marina, restaurants...and shopping! This is a good destination to spend a half day, visit the various shops and the town square, and to enjoy a pleasant meal.
BAHIA TONGOLUNDABahia Tongolunda is the most developed of the 9 bays of Huatulco, and this is where some of the nicest hotels can be found. Along the main coastal avenue there are many shops offering everything from clothing, leather, silver goods and much more. For visitors who are staying in the Tongolunda Bay area, these shops are a convenient way to escape the confines of the hotel and spend some money.
As a new resort Huatulco does not offer as many transportation options as the other established Mexican destinations. Still, each year it becomes easier to get to, and get around Huatulco. For extensive information on driving an RV into Mexico visit the web site of ON THE ROAD IN MEXICO. If you think you may need the services of an emergency Air Evacuation company while visiting Mexico visit the web site of SKY MED INTERNATIONAL or call them at (800) 475-9633 for additional information. Review this MAP OF HUATULCO to become familiar with the area.
AIRLINES * BUSES * CAR RENTALS * TAXI CABS * WATER TAXIS
AIRLINES
The Bays of Huatulco are served by Huatulco International Airport, which is located
about 16 miles north of the main resort bay of Tangolunda. The airport is surrounded
by mountain jungles and the views on final approach are quite exciting!
The airport has two main terminal areas, one for domestic flights and one for
international flights. The terminals seem to fit in with the tropical flavor of the area,
unlike many of the stark and modern airports in Mexico's other resorts.
Taxis (about $20) and mini-vans (under $10) are available in front of the airport to
deliver visitors to the hotel areas and other nearby tourist destinations.
BUSESBuses connect the main tourist areas of Tangolunda, Santa Cruz and Chahue Bay. They are not as convenient as taxis, but the cost of taking a bus is only a fraction of cab fare. Buses run seven days a week from 9:00 a.m until 7:00 p.m.
CAR RENTALS
Renting a car for a day or two of your trip can be fun, but having a rental car for
your entire stay in Huatulco is probably unnecessary. Cars are available at the airport
(reserve in advance for the best rates) and from most of the larger hotels in the area.
It's always a good idea to perform a complete walk around inspection of the car you
are renting before taking possession of it. Making written notes of any dings or
dents will save you trouble when you return the car. Also, check your spare tire!
Check out the SIDE TRIPS and LOCAL INTEREST sections of our Huatulco section
for fun places to take your rental car!
TAXI CABS
Taxis are by far the most convenient way to get around Huatulco. Although they
can be a bit more expensive than the shuttle vans when it comes to getting to
and from the airport, taxis are the preferred way to hop around town to get to
the restaurants and shops. Setting the price to your destination before getting
into the cab is always a good idea. Small tips are usually appreciated, but not
always necessary.
Taxis generally can be found at the airport, near the larger hotels and
restaurants, and near the town square in Santa Cruz and in La Crucecita.
WATER TAXIS
Exploring the undeveloped coves, beaches and islands is not mandatory for a Huatulco
vacation but it should be! The fact is that most of Huatulco's visitors will rarely
have the opportunity to visit a coastline this unspoiled and beautiful. To miss these
special beaches would certainly be a shame.
Probably the best way to get from the tourist areas to these beaches is a water taxi.
These boats and pangas depart from Tangolunda beach, as well as from Bahia Santa Cruz.
Reservations can be made at the front desk of many hotels, or you can drop by in person
to catch a boat without a reservation. Some of the best places to visit include
Huatulco real estate is an up and coming. As the popularity of this area grows, real estate prices can't be far behind. PROPERTY FOR SALE
VILLA PACIFICOTelephone (530) 583-1367.
As tempting as it might be to spend all of your vacation time hanging out poolside or at the beach during your vacation, sometimes it can be fun to set aside a half day or so to check out some of the local highlights.
If you've got ants in your pants and you just gotta check out the surrounding area (after all, you are already in the neighborhood), Huatulco has a few colorful excursions for you. OAXACA * PUERTO ANGEL * PUERTO ESCONDIDO
Internet access is on the way to Huatulco, but don't plan on e-mail when you get there. Telephone service is still the main way to keep in touch with the rest of the world. Most of the larger hotels in Huatulco have telephones, but the service fee varies from one hotel to another. Accessing the number you need using your ATT calling card is one of the most affordable ways to phone home. If you are really concerned about cost, try the 'Larga Distancia' telephones stores in La Crucecita and Santa Cruz. Plan on spending about $1.35 per minute and bring small bills (U.S. dollars or pesos) for payment. Remember, you are being charged by the minute, so keeping it short will leave you with more money for shopping later on! For the new dialing instructions from the United States to Mexico, as well as the new Mexico area codes you can call AT&T at (800) 869-1707 or drop by their Mexico dialing instructions web site at MEXICO DIALING INFO. Reviewing the questions and answers in Huatulco FAQS is a great way to garner a 'head's up' on the area before you get to town. The more you review the Huatulco section of Mexico Expo and surf these FAQS, the more enjoyable your vacation will be.
Carlos; We have decided to visit Huatulco for our anniversary. My husband wants to be sure we avoid the 'rainy season'. What months do you you think are best to avoid rain. ~ Julie Julie; Huatulco is located in the tropics, so the likelihood of rain from June through September is high. The driest months run from November through April. Keep in mind that even though there is a greater likelihood of rain during the rainy season, the rain usually only lasts for a few hours in the afternoon. The exception would be if the rain was caused by a tropical storm or Chubasco (hurricane). In that case the rain could last for a couple of days. These larger storms can usually be spotted in advance so you can plan accordingly. For more information drop by the WEATHER section of Mexico Expo. ~ Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; Does a one day trip to Puerto Escondido sound like a realistic excursion from Huatulco? I have heard good things about this resort city. ~ Bill Bill; You can definitely make it to and from Puerto Escondido in a day, but you may find the rush a little frustrating. 'Puerto' is a relaxed seaside town that would be difficult to fully enjoy in just a day. Think about spending a night or two of your vacation in Puerto Escondido, either before or after you go to Huatulco. This town is growing up fast, so don't wait to long! ~ Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; We have decided to treat ourselves to a vacation in Huatulco, before the area gets too big. My friends have stayed at the Club Med there and had a great time, but we are thinking about staying in a traditional hotel. What do you think? ~ Tasha Tasha; I say go for the Club Med. Their Huatulco facility is the flagship of all of their Mexican Clubs, and it is truly a spectacular place to stay. In addition to the resort being spectacular, it is located in a great cove with incredible beaches. It is an awesome way to spend a vacation. For more information drop by the CLUB MED section of Mexico Expo. ~ Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; My fiancée and I are snorkel fanatics, and we like the idea of a warm water dive location. Should we avoid the winter months in Huatulco? ~ Beth Beth; One of the great things about Huatulco is that the ocean water is warm there all year. As a mater of fact, in the latter part of summer the water temperature actually gets hot. The key factor here is Huatulco's latitude. It sits pretty far south into the tropics, where the ocean water rarely gets below the mid 70's and is often in the 80's. So diving here all year long is great! ~ Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; Huatulco is located in southern Mexico where we have heard there has been some political unrest in the past. Do you think we will have any problems? ~ Mary Mary; Probably not. The Chiapas area you are referring to is quiet a distance from Huatulco. And besides, they don't have any problems with the tourists, their big gripe was not receiving recognition and representation from the Mexican government. Vincent Fox, the president of Mexico, has been working with these native people and progress looks likely. ~ Carlos Fiesta
Huatulco is located in southern Mexico in the tropics. This means that the weather is dry and warm from November through May and humid with a greater likelihood of some afternoon rain from June through October. In addition to the possibility of afternoon showers during the wet season from June through October, the warmer sea temperatures during this time of the year and higher humidity make it possible for tropical storms and Chubascos to be generated along the coast. For all practical purposes Huatulco is a 12 month destination, although those who want to maximize the likelihood of dry weather should consider the winter and spring months. TODAY'S WEATHER along the Huatulco coast. For the bigger picture check out the SATELLITE VIEW of the weather in Mexico.
