WELCOME TO GUAYMAS AND SAN CARLOS! Guaymas (population 130,000) and San Carlos (population 7,000) are the most northerly of Mexico's mainland tourist destinations. Located on the shores of the Sea of Cortez just a few hundred miles south of Arizona, these two towns receive more drive-down traffic than any other Mexican mainland destination. The large and protected natural harbor at Guaymas is perfect for boat lovers, and many visitors leave their boats in the water here all year and then fly or dive down when they have a chance. This beautiful harbor, combined with the clear waters of the Sea of Cortez and the tall, rugged mountains just inland combine to give this area a unique feeling very similar to the eastern flank of Baja, California. Originally occupied by Indians, Spanish explorers discovered the area in the 1530's and the settlement of Guaymas was finally founded in 1769. Soon after, in 1814 it became an important Spanish-Mexican port. The town was occupied by Americans more than once during the 1800's, and the French had their hand in the area for a while also. The dust settled down after the 1910 Revolucion, and tourism became popular in the 1950's. Today's Guaymas still has a small town feel to it. The waterfront Malecon at the west end of Avenida Serdan still offers slower paced vistas of the magnificent Sea of Cortez, and the fishing boats still plow the waters each morning in search of their daily catch. If you can read Spanish you'll enjoy this brief HISTORY OF GUAYMAS. Boaters might find Mexico's NAUTICAL LADDER plan interesting. The idea is to build marinas all around Baja and on the northern portion of the Mexico mainland. Guaymas is right in the middle of the action! Visitors to Guaymas who are members of the Kiwanis Club are welcome to visit the web site of GUAYMAS KIWANIS CLUB". To get a feel of the area try this MAP OF GUAYMAS. GUAYMAS: To get the full effect of the Guaymas area with it's azure seas, striking mountains and crystal clear skies take a walk along the waterfront section of Avenida Serdan, the main street in town. There are several small seafood restaurants nearby to sit down and enjoy the view. SAN CARLOS: Head down to the marina and grab a drik and a muffin at the small cafe just up form the water. Internet access is available!
HOT TIP #1: To really see San Carlos you have to get out on the water! The folks at SURFACE TIME offer boat charters, fishing excursions and diving in the local waters!
HOT TIP #2: Looking for a fun adventure? Guaymas and San Carlos are just a short hop across the Sea of Cortez from one of natures most incredible land formations...the Baja Peninsula. And Guaymas just happens to have a ferry connecting it to Baja for those who want to explore this magnificent peninsula. The ferry lands in Santa Rosalia on Baja's east coast, which played host to a huge mining operation back in the 19th century. Although Santa Rosalia today is still a very interesting town, the coastal villages of MULEGE and BAHIA CONCEPCION offer more of the true sleepy Baja ambiance. For more information on Baja drop by the BAJA section of Mexico Expo. For more information on getting across the Sea of Cortez drop by the FERRY section.
Like most coastal resorts in Mexico, beaches are the name of the game in Guaymas! The better beaches are north of town west of San Carlos. They tend to be wide, sandy and the ocean surface is usually calm. Ocean water temperatures climb into the 80's by late summer and then dip into the mid 60's in winter. Remember, all beaches in Mexico are open to the public, although the land fronting the beach may be privately owned. WINDSURFING
If you love seafood, you'll love Guaymas. It's a wonderful place to eat! There are also several excellent restaurants that serve Mexican food, as well as many other dishes. Most restaurants in the Guaymas ~ San Carlos area accept U.S. dollars and pesos, but many do not yet accept credit cards. Tipping for good service is always appreciated, although the percentage of a tip is usually less than in the U.S. Try to resist the option of eating all of your meals in the hotel restaurant. Eating out is a great way to experience the other parts of Guaymas! A few of your options include...
Guaymas and San Carlos are not known for their nightlife, but there are a few places in town that make it interesting. Some of the larger hotels offer some type of evening entertainment, others let you fend for yourself.
Don't you dare go home without shopping! If you are staying in Guaymas and have not yet
planned an excursion to San Carlos, this is your chance to plan a nice little visit to the
wonderful shops on the bay!
If you like to negotiate prices try to be aware of the unwritten rules. In general the nicer
the shopping establishment is, the less excited they are going to be about haggling with
you about prices. While you might have very little success bartering in a nice hotel boutique,
your negotiating skills will probably be appreciated and rewarded with some of the smaller
vendors throughout town
More shops are accepting credit cards in Guaymas and San Carlos, but some still do not.
U.S. dollars are universally accepted as payment, as long as you have smaller denomination
bills. Most of the nicer shops will add a tax to your bill, while some of the smaller shops
will not.

Because of the close proximity to the U.S. border, just as many people drive to Guaymas and San Carlos as fly. Guaymas is located about 260 miles south of Nogales, and the road to Guaymas is a four lane highway. There are four toll stations on this drive that will accept U.S. dollars or pesos, but not a combination of each. Driving down requires a Tourist Visa (under $20) and an "Only Sonora" vehicle pass. Getting to and getting around Guaymas and San Carlos is easy! There are only a few airlines that fly into the area, all of them are listed below. And once you arrive in town, think about the possibility of renting a car. Although you may not need a car for your entire stay, you may want to take a one day excursion up or down the coast to discover a deserted beach or a sleepy fishing village! Taxis are also a good way to take those short hops to dinner and shopping. And even a reasonable way to connect between Guaymas and San Carlos for those half-day excursions! Guaymas is served by ...... International Airport. For an international airport this is a pretty small place, just large enough to accommodate several flights a day for the U.S. and other parts of Mexico. The airport is located west of town about 10 minutes by cab or rental car.
Deluxe long range buses from Transportes del Pacifico connect Guaymas to the north
with Arizona, and to the south to other coastal cities.
Smaller and less glamorous buses take locals and tourists to Playa Miramar and along
Avenida Serdan.
There are 3 bus stations located just south of Avenida Serdan at the corner of
Avenida Rodriguez and Calle 14. Car rentals are available at the airport and at the larger hotels. If you are planning on
staying poolside during most of your stay, renting a car at the airport might not be
necessary. But renting a car from the hotel for a one day excursion might be the perfect
way to take in the surrounding natural beauty.

Although Guaymas and San Carlos are sleepy by most Mexican resort standards, there are still enough things to do here to keep you out of trouble.
We have designed this section of our Guaymas Travel Guide to help you with commonly asked questions about this particular part of Mexico. It's always a good idea to sharpen up your learning curve before you star your vacation!
Carlos; My wife and I are water fanatics, and we are excited about spending a week on the beach in Guaymas next winter. Is the Sea of Cortez still warm in January? - Robert
Robert; The weather in Guaymas is great almost all year long, even in winter, and the Sea of Cortez is warm most of the year. It does, however, get a bit chilly from January through May. During these months the water temp will usually drop below 70 degrees, which is a comfort line for many people. If you really want warm water, and you have to go in Winter, think about a location in Mexico a bit further south, in the Tropics. The water temperature further south is warm all year long! - Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; A friend of mine has a boat in the harbor in San Carlos. He has invited me fishing several times, but I have never been to Mexico. Any suggestions? - Tony
Tony; Yes I have a suggestion. Get off your ass and get on your buddy's boat! San Carlos / Guaymas is the perfect first-time destination for someone who has never been to Mexico! You get the real flavor of the country without all of the tourist hype and distractions found in other larger Mexican resorts. And the people and weather are great! - Carlos Fiesta
Carlos; We are thinking about doing a Guaymas trip with a side excursion to Copper Canyon on the train. We only have a week to get it all in. Is this feasible? - Gesi
Gesi; The Copper Canyon trip is quite an undertaking by itself, as far as getting there, setting up the lodging and the train ride, and then getting home. The road from Guaymas to Los Mochis is a good road, and will take you less than a day to drive, but then you have to go inland quite a ways on a much smaller road to get to the Canyon. I would think you would do better planning a separate trip for the Copper Canyon adventure, and take a slower pace while staying in San Carlos. - Carlos Fiesta
Guaymas is not in the Tropics (although it is pretty close) but it is far enough south where the weather is warm, even in the winter. It gets a bit hot in the summer, and if you enjoy 100 degree temperatures in a dry desert environment, this is a great place to be. Curious about the current GUAYMAS WEATHER? Check out the 10 day forecast while you are at it! The HISTORICAL WEATHER DATA will show you more about the climate in Guaymas.
