WELCOME TO ACAPULCO!

Acapulco is the original Mexico playground for those who wanted to escape to a beautiful tropical beach. Like many large cities, Acapulco has experienced growth and changes, but it is back on track as a premier tourist destination as we enter the new millennium.

This huge natural bay was a main west coast port in the fifteenth century, and saw it's fair share of commerce and pirate activity. When Hernan Cortez landed here and ordered his boats to be burned to ensure success in taking over the area he was only 19 years old. In 1599 Acapulco was established as a Spanish city and served as an important port for goods from the Orient to be shipped inland to Mexico City and also to Spain. The tradition continues as Acapulco now helps to export sugar, coffee and many other products.

In 1927 a main road was completed that connected Acapulco with other Mexican cities to the north, including Mexico City. A new and improved road was later completed in 1955, and there was no turning back for this sleepy fishing village. Acapulco soon became the playground of the upper classes in Mexico City, with the tropical weather and beautiful beaches being the main draw.

International visitors discovered Acapulco when air service began in 1964. Soon Acapulco was an official playground of the Hollywood stars, right up there with Palm Springs, California and Sun Valley, Idaho.

Acapulco reached a temporary tourist destination peak in the latter part of the 1970's as Fonatur, the Mexican Government's tourism development agency, started focusing on the shiny new resort of Cancun. Realizing that Acapulco was loosing important tourism business to it's new Caribbean competitor, Mexico spent more than half a billion dollars upgrading Acapulco's infrastructure and tourist facilities. The efforts worked, and in the 1990's Acapulco again became a very fashionable International destination.

The city is again in an expansion mode, and new resorts, homes and condos are under construction in many areas. Tourism now attracts over 1.5 million visitors a year, including visitors who live in other parts of Mexico.

Once a year Acapulco becomes the center of Mexico's travel industry by hosting the annual TIANGUIS TRAVEL SHOW. It's a Who's Who of Mexico travel and not to be missed if you are in the Mexico Travel industry.

Great beaches, excellent food, and nightlife to rival the best insure that Acapulco will continue to attract visitors well into the 21st century.

To get a feel for the way the city is laid out you can review the ACAPULCO MAP.

If you want to share a good web site or company for Acapulco tourism we would love to hear from you! SUBMIT INFORMATION HERE.

To capture a broader perspective of Acapulco and it's beautiful bays, take the coastal road from the airport to the Observation Point near the naval base. This hill overlooks Acapulco Bay, the city of Acapulco as well as the smaller protected Bahia de Puerto Marques. Those with an appetite and a little time will appreciate the quiet restaurants on the beach below at Playa Pichilingue in the northwest corner of Bahia de Puerto Marques. Now this is Acapulco!

The Acapulco cliff divers are famous throughout the world, and this is something that the visitor should not miss. These young men train for two years to be able to climb 105 feet up the La Perla granite cliffs, and then time their dives to coincide with the changing ocean swells down below. While the depth of the water when an ocean swell comes in might be 12 to 15 feet, the depth can decrease to less than 10 feet when the waves recede. One wrong move and serious injury or death is a very realistic possibility. The speed these divers reach as they hit the water often causes sprains and dislocated shoulders. It's no wonder the divers pray to the patron saint of diving, Saint Guadalupe, before each jump!

The locals enjoy telling visitors the story about the history of the Acapulco cliff divers. They say that years ago the rocky area was a productive fishing platform. Whenever a fisherman's hook would get stuck on the rocks at the bottom the fishermen would dive off of the rocks into the water to set the hook free. Over the years the competition between the fishermen increased to see who was macho enough to dive from the higher areas on the rocks. The rest, as they say, is history!

Chief diver Ismael usually keeps 16 men active at cliff diving here, and new young men continually join the elite club. Check it out from the viewing area at the south end.

Beaches are what put Acapulco on the map, and beaches are what keep the tourists coming back! The main bay is Bahia de Acapulco, and it stretches over 4 miles across at it's widest point, offering a 6 mile curved beach. Most of the bay is very protected from the ocean swells, so the waters are calm and safe for swimming. Most of the large hotels are located either on this bay, or just behind the bay in the hills overlooking the bay.

There are also beaches north and south of the main bay, but these beaches are somewhat removed from the main tourist action. Not a bad thing if you are looking for a slower pace and bit more privacy!

The ocean temperature is warm in Acapulco all year long. It bottoms out in the mid 70's in February and then climbs well into the high 80's by late summer. So if you have been a water panzy in the past you have no excuse in Acapulco!

If you are going in the water check out the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Acapulco.

Remember that all of the beaches in Acapulco are open to the public, although access to some of the more secluded beaches north and south of town might be over privately owned property. Enjoy!

Although bigger does not always mean better, the ACAPULCO PRINCESS is actually both. This is the ultimate "mega-resort" and it offers just about everything you can imagine in a hotel. 3 bars, 5 huge pools, 7 restaurants, 11 tennis courts, 18 holes of golf and a whole lot more. All this sitting on a great beach at the south end of Acapulco. If it sounds almost too big for your taste, it's at least worth a look for lunch so you can tell the folks back home. Howard Hughes used to hang here for months, but he never left his room!

Looking for something a little more intimate? The LAS BRISAS ACAPULCO is known around the world for it's hillside bungalows with private pools and spectacular ocean views! Most of these mini-villas are quite a walk to the beach, but with a view like that and a pool at your back door you probably won't notice!

Acapulco is located on a huge calm bay, so recreational opportunities are many and varied.

For visitors looking for extreme excitement, SHOTOVER RIVER TOURS offers high-speed river adventures in a jet boat. You've probably seen this type of speed boat running through narrow canyons in New Zealand on TV, and now this high-anxiety sport is available about one hour east of Acapulco. The 5 liter V-8 engines on this boat reach over 4,000 R.P.M. and the wind blowing through your hair will blow you away. The drivers of these boats train for over 7 weeks, so the likelihood of a crash is small. For further information contact the front desk of most large hotels or call them directly at 011-52 (744) 484-1154.

Many of Acapulco's recreation options are in, on or near the Pacific Ocean. It's fun to review the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE before you jump in.

For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo.

A few of your other recreation options include:

SCUBA DIVING * FISHING * GOLFING

HORSEBACK RIDING * SAILING * SURFING

TENNIS * WATER SKIING * WINDSURFING

DIVING

The waters off of Acapulco offer very good scuba diving and snorkeling. Ocean temperatures are warm all year long and actually very warm during mid to late summer. Visibility is usually very good, especially in winter. Summer visibility is also very good, except right after the summer storms that can hit the coast from June through September.

FISHING

Fishing has been a main focus for the waters off of Acapulco for hundreds of years. Today fishermen fly into Acapulco from all over the world to try their luck at Acapulco's game fish and sail fish. Much of the fishing evolves around the ocean water temperatures, which dips into the mid-70's in February and then back up to the high 80's by August.

Catch-and-Release is gaining popularity in Acapulco just as in CABO SAN LUCAS. Fishermen often like to take home a trophy and then release the balance to be caught again at a later date.

HORSEBACK RIDING

Acapulco offers horseback riding on the beaches as well as in the foothills behind town. Two beaches that are known to have horses available include Playa Revolcadero and Pie de la Cuesta (Foot of the Grade). Bring a carrot!

SAILING

There is no easy way to sail to Acapulco, so it tends to attract a rather serious sailing crowd. Whether gunking up for a night or a month, the marina offers excellent facilities.

Most cruisers who hit port in Acapulco are from the United States. The normal route is to cruise down the BAJA PENINSULA, and then provision up in CABO SAN LUCAS or LA PAZ. At that point sailors decide whether to cut across the Sea of Cortez to the closest port at MAZATLAN, or head further down the mainland coast to PUERTO VALLARTA or MANZANILLO.

An excellent book to bring along when cruising the coast of Mexico is Captain John and Pat Rains MEXICO BOATING GUIDE. Got a question about sailing Mexico's ports and coastline? The answer is probably in there. It's a great book and Carlos Fiesta has used it often. For a second opinion try CHARLIE'S CHARTS.

The weather is good for sailing Acapulco's waters almost all year long. The chance of bad weather increases from June through September when occasional chubascos stir things up. But the vast majority of the year the waters are spectacular for sailing. Bon Voyage!

SURFING

Warm water waves are just one of the reasons to surf mainland Mexico. Throw in some cold beer and some hot chicks...why go home?

Visit HORIZONS WEST for information on surf expeditions north of Puerto Vallarta.

Also located on the mainland north of P.V. is COSTA AZUL surf resort, a great place for surfers looking for a relaxed surfing environment.

Drop in on the web site of SURFARIMEX for additional information on surf tours into Mexico!

SIESTAS & OLAS is a very fun film about surfing Mexico. The action in the film starts off with epic Baja at Scorpion Bay, and then transitions to the awesome sliders and bone crunchers of mainland Mexico. The film was produced by Dan-O Surf Films in Santa Barbara, California (by Dan Wosniak), and can be purchased on video and DVD at your local surf shop or by visiting their web site. See it and feel good.

And for a good time on-line drop your Sex Wax and check out the Reef Brazil girls at the REEF web site.

SWELL.COM always has good stuff to check out when you can't go surfing and need your fix.

Leave your wet suit at home and grab your rash guard. The OCEAN TEMPERATURES in Mexico are nice all year long!

WATER SKIING

Water skiing isn't exactly the first thing you think about when Acapulco recreation options are discussed. But Acapulco offers both salt water skiing in the main bay as well as fresh water skiing just 20 minutes from town.

  • COYUCA LAGOON

    Northwest of the city.
    Also a good place for fresh water fishing!

WINDSURFING

Acapulco Bay is usually quite calm, but there are some beaches south of town that are more exposed to the prevailing winds. Also try the inland lakes, including nearby Coyuca Lagoon. For serious windsurfing head across the Sea of Cortez to BUENA VISTA in Baja!

Acapulco has a very large selection of dining options. Taco stands and fast food franchises line the busy streets, and full service restaurants are scattered throughout town and in most of the larger hotels.

Acapulco offers more than a few eateries with big ocean views, and if you time it right you can capture a spectacular tableside sunset. A walk on the beach after eating is a great way to let your meal settle in and the fresh air is a bonus.

Tipping is always appreciated for good service in Acapulco, although the amount of the tip is usually less than in the U.S. A tip of 10% of the bill is considered a good tip, and if the service is excellent larger tips are justified.

For more information on what to do after dinner check out or NIGHTLIFE section!

Acapulco's night life is notorious! Going out on the town can mean enjoying a few drinks before heading back to the hotel, or dancing until 4:00 in the morning.

Although disco is still big in Acapulco, there are many other options geared towards pleasing the tourist.

Dressing up is a big part of the Acapulco night scene. Shorts and a tank top? They'll let you in at Carlos and Charlie's, but forget trying to get into a fancy dance club.

And when you go out on the town in Acapulco, bring along some dinero. Between the cover charges at the dance clubs and the cost of fancy cocktails you can burn through quite a bit of money on a full night on the town.

Taking taxis is the best way to get around for a night of clubbing. Cabs are usually easy to find and the cost is reasonable, especially if the fee is split between several people.

The legal drinking age in Acapulco is 18 years so watch out for inexperienced cocktailers.

If you've even wanted to go to one of those nightclubs that offer "foam parties" (you know, the kind of dance floor you've seen on the Travel Channel where everyone is dancing in bubbles) Acapulco can accomodate you. Enjoy!

Acapulco is a large city and offers all of the shopping options you would expect from a popular tourist destination. In addition to the shopping areas along Costera, don't be afraid to sneak a few blocks from the bay to some of the smaller stores out of the main tourists circles.

Plaza Bahia, next to the Acapulco Plaza Hotel, is a large enclosed mall with shops and restaurants and is a good place to walk around after spending the morning on the beach.

For another fun shopping experience head on over to the Acapulco Princess hotel. This huge resort offers some nice upscale shops, and is a cool place to walk around to check out the elaborate grounds.

If you were too busy poolside and partying to go shopping while in town, don't fret. There are some fun shops at the airport to buy last minute souvenirs while you wait for your plane. Some take credit cards, some don't. They all take dollars.

While most of Acapulco's international visitors arrive by air, many of Acapulco's domestic fans drive in from surrounding cities in Mexico.

Acapulco International is a large, full-service airport and is located about 25 minutes south of town.

Taxi cabs and shuttle vans are available at the airport for transportation into town.

For extensive information on driving an RV into Mexico visit the web site of ON THE ROAD IN MEXICO.

If you think you may need the services of an emergency Air Evacuation company while visiting Mexico visit the web site of SKY MED INTERNATIONAL or call them at (800) 475-9633 for additional information.

To get a feel for the way the city is laid out you can review the ACAPULCO MAP.

AIRLINES

The airport is Acapulco International Airport and is located south of town 12 miles, about 25 minutes from town. Taxi service and car rentals are available to take visitors to town. Tranportes Terrestres busses also provide transportation to town for under $10 per person. Their phone number is 011-52 (748) 3-6500.

Check to see if Aero Mexico still offers non-stop flights to Acapulco. This will help you avoid a stop along the way.

BUSES

Buses connect Acapulco with the other resort towns up and down the coast, as well as with Mexico City. Local buses connect the various areas within the city, but are not necessarily the only way for visitors to hop around town.

The main coastal road running along the beach is called Costero, and is the main access road for hotels, restaurants, shopping and recreation. Buses run along Costero frequently, and taxis are readily available. The buses are cheap, the taxis are not.

CAR RENTALS

Car rentals are available at the Acapulco International Airport, and at most of the major hotels. Renting a car for your entire stay is probably not necessary in Acapulco, as much of what is happening is along the main beach. Renting a car for a one day excursion can be fun for those looking for a road trip adventure.

Most car rental companies in Acapulco offer unlimited mileage, so don't be afraid to set a course for a side trip up or down the coast. Your auto insurance at home will not meet the required insurance needs for liability coverage while driving in Mexico, although your home policy just may cover some damage to the car you are renting.

Performing a complete walk-around inspection of the car and making written notes will help avoid misunderstandings when you return the vehicle later on. Be sure to check for a spare tire and a jack!

TAXIS

Taxis are by far the most convenient way to get around Acapulco. They can be found at most tourist hang-outs including the airport, major hotels, restaurants and evening hot spots. Taxis are also plentiful along Costero, the main boulevard that runs along the main bay in Acapulco.

Taxis are also a fun way to see the other side of Acapulco. For a reasonable set fee most taxi drivers will take you on a private tour of the city, showing you the more popular sights and even waiting for you while you take pictures or take a short stroll. It is important to set an exact fee with the driver and to establish the approximate time frame you anticipate to be 'on tour' before getting in the cab. Tips for excellent service are always appreciated.

TOURS

Although most of Acapulco is about beaches, there is much more of interest to the traveler. Taking a tour with a tour company has be very insightful and convenient. Tour companies be booked at the front desk of most hotels.

If you are looking for a "value added" vacation and have the time to sneak away, there are several excursions for the antsy traveler. Short trips up or down the coast give the traveler an insight of a very different Mexico.

Costa Chica is the name given to the many miles of open coastline south of Acapulco. Few tourists take the time to explore this fascinating stretch of lagoons, jungle and foothills. The village of San Marcos is a good stopping point for a cold drink or a warm meal. Highway 200, which runs along the coast, is sometimes in good condition and sometimes not. Potholes can accumulate during the rainy season from July through September.

The coast north of Acapulco is known as Costa Grande and is also accessed by Mexico Highway 200. The winding road snakes through thick jungle and ultimately ends up in IXTAPA and in Zihuatanejo. The full trip is less than 3 hours by car. But who's in a hurry!

Acapulco also offers another side trip for those who don't mind driving for a half day. MEXICO CITY is a destination on it's own, but driving up for a day or two can be a very enjoyable side trip.

Like most big cities in Mexico Acapulco offers all of the communication options you will need to keep in touch with family, friends and the gang back at the office. Internet Cafes are popping up, and telephone service has improved significantly. Don't be surprised at the number of cell phones you see as you walk the streets of Acapulco!

For the new dialing instructions from the United States to Mexico, as well as the new Mexico area codes you can call AT&T at (800) 869-1707 or drop by their Mexico dialing instructions web site at MEXICO DIALING INFO.

For more information on keeping in touch while in Mexico check out the COMMUNICATION section of Mexico Expo.

Reviewing this section of Frequently Asked Questions is a good way to sharpen up your learning curve before heading to Acapulco. The more you learn before you arrive in town the more fun you will have when you get there!

Carlos;

We will be visiting Acapulco, but only for a short time. We are looking for fun things to do that will make our trip memorable. Do you have any suggestions? ~ Marie

Marie;

If you really want to cut to the chase there are three things that will make your trip to Acapulco memorable. Watching the cliff divers at the south end of town is a must! There are few places in the world where you can experience this kind of talent. Next you might consider the speedboat river adventure by Shotover Tours. Unless you are going to New Zealand soon you won't have a chance to enjoy this kind of breath-taking ride. And if you still have the energy try a taste of the non-stop nightlife in Acapulco. Just make sure you don't have to get up early the next morning! ~ Carlos Fiesta

Carlos;

We are looking forward to 10 days in Acapulco, but we would like to experience some of the coastline out of town. Possibly a 2 or 3 day excursion. Should we head further down the coast? ~ Joseph

Joe;

Taking a coastal cruise is a great idea, but consider heading north rather than south. The road south of Acapulco stays a bit in from the coast and is not as scenic as the northern road. Highway 200 heading north from Acapulco skirts the coast several times, and within a few hours drive arrives at the twin coastal cities of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. These resorts each offer a distinctly different personality, yet are only about 15 minutes apart. For more information check out the IXTAPA section of Mexico Expo.
~ Carlos Fiesta

Carlos;

The private villas in Las Brisas look spectacular. But my fiancée and I love watersports and think a beachfront hotel might be a better idea. Is any portion of Las Brisas actually located on the beach? ~ Patricia

Patricia;

The northern views of Acapulco Bay from the Las Brisas Villas are indeed spectacular. But beach access is not as readily available as some of the other hotels, such as the nearby Acapulco Princess. If you think you will be spending a lot of time going in and out of the ocean then a beachfront hotel might make more sense. If you treasure a quiet and romantic environment and a private pool with spectacular views then the Las Brisas will not disappoint you. ~ Carlos Fiesta

Carlos;

We like the idea of getting out on the water while in Acapulco. Are any short cruises available? ~ Bradley

Brad;

There are several companies that offer cruises in Acapulco Bay. These boats usually offer daytime snorkel trips, late afternoon sunset cruises and sometimes evening cocktail cruises. Check with the front desk of your hotel for rates and times. Boats usually depart from the north end of the bay near downtown Acapulco. ~ Carlos Fiesta

Carlos;

I have heard that there is a music festival in Acapulco. Do you know what time of the year it is held and what type of music is offered? ~ Helga

Helga;

Acapulco hosts the Acapulco International Music Fair every year in May. The type of music of music offered is very diverse, as are the venues throughout town where the various musicians play. Some of the types of music include Mariachi, modern pop, rock, traditional Mexican music and much more. ~ Carlos Fiesta

Acapulco is located in the tropics and the weather is nice all year long. During the winter and spring Acapulco's temperatures are usually in the high 70's and 80's, while in summer the temperature and humidity increases. Tropical storms and chubascos (hurricanes) can occur between July and November. These weather systems are generally short in duration, usually not lasting more that a couple of days.

The likelihood of brief afternoon showers also increases during the summer months, but tend to cool things off and usually leave before dark. The clouds from these rains provide wonderful formations for Acapulco's sunsets.

The ocean water temperature is warm all year long in Acapulco, dipping down to the mid 70's by March and then rising to the mid to upper 80's by late summer.

To review the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Acapulco and other parts of Mexico.
