WELCOME TO ZACATECAS, MEXICO
Zacatecas is the capital of the state of Zacatecas located in the northern part of Mexico, about an hour north of Aguascalientes. It is located on the slopes of Cerro de la Bufa in a narrow ravine. Zacatecas was a busy mining center in the Pre-columbian days and silver mining continued after the Spaniards took over the area in 1548. Mining on a rather large scale continues in the surrounding mountains and valley today, and cattle ranching is also a main activity. The University of Zacatecas lies in contrast to the many colonial buildings throughout town. These colonial buildings include the baroque Cathedral, the Government Palace, the Calderon Theater and several historic churches. There are also several museums in town, including the Museo Francisco Gottia with it's sculptures and paintings, the Museo Pedro Coronel featuring unique private works and the Museo Rafael Coronel with it's extensive exhibit of masks and figurines. A unique tramway can be enjoyed south of town which spans two peaks and offers airplane views of the mountains and valley below. The Zacatecas Teleferico is located next to the Bosque Hotel and covers a distance of over 2,000 horizontal feet across the valley. Nearby side trips include the Chicomostoc Ruins which date back over a thousand years to the early Indian settlements and the Convento de Guadalupe, a church and monastery that was active during the 16th century. Zacatecas is served by Mexicana Airlines. For more information drop by the TRANSPORTATION section of Mexico Expo. The State Tourism Bureau can be reached at 011-52 (492) 4-0393 and is located in front of the train station downtown. ZACATECAS HOTELS
