WELCOME TO SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
Located well off the typical tourist track, San Miguel de Allende attracts visitors and retired Americans and Canadians who want to experience the authentic flavor of Mexico. The narrow cobblestone streets are pedestrian friendly, and walking through town allows the visitor a chance to drink in some of the incredible architecture located throughout the town. In 1926 the Mexican government declared San Miguel de Allende a national monument to preserve the character of the town. Even new buildings must conform to the aestetic designs of the village. The original town was built along the winding valley floor. But soon the narrow streets snaked their way into the surrounding hillsides and the development filled in the terrain. Today's San Miguel is a very compact collection of houses, hotels, shops, cafes, and churches, with most roads leading to the Jardin Park as a focal point. Every Sunday at noon locals and visitors meet at the public library to join a pedestrian caraven which tours local homes and area gardens. The library itself is well worth a look for it's large selection of English language publications. For additional information on colonial buildings in the country visit the EXPLORING COLONIAL MEXICO web site. More information on Mexico's colonial towns can be reviewed at MEXICO'S COLONIAL TOWNS.
