WELCOME TO PUERTO VALLARTA!

Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's most popular resorts hosting over one million visitors each year! Although it was discovered by Spanish soldiers in the early 16th century, the area did not receive it's first permanent settlement until 1851. "P.V." (as some of the locals call it) has grown up a lot in the last 150 years. It started off as a sleepy Mexican fishing village trapped between the spectacular blue Pacific and the thick green jungles of the interior mountains of the Sierra Vallejo and Sierra Cuale. The word got out about Puerto Vallarta's charms shortly after the filming of the 1963 movie "Night of the Iguana" featuring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It's reputation as one of Mexico's most romantic towns has yet to fade.

Puerto Vallarta is located on the shores of beautiful Banderas Bay. This huge crescent bay is one of the largest and deepest bays on the Pacific Ocean (over 20 miles across) and hosts large sandy beaches, occasionally interrupted by dramatic cliffs reaching into the ocean. The town has maintained an authentic look of colonial style architecture, red tile roofs, and a host of lush foliage woven into quaint cobblestone streets. Throw in a latitude similar to Hawaii and you have the makings of a tropical destination perfect for a fun getaway!

Downtown Puerto Vallarta is the heart of the action, and a very picturesque place to spend time. Walking the cobblestone streets one will find a variety of restaurants, bistros, shops, art galleries and markets. The seaside Malecon with it's brass artwork and sculptures is a great place to soak up the flavor of PV.

Although tourism is big in Puerto Vallarta, the town's economy hums along with a diversified commerce base, keeping the local population of 300,000 busy. Tourists enjoy Puerto Vallarta all year long, although the summer months do offer an increased chance of afternoon rains. These short rains provide a backdrop for Puerto Vallarta's spectacular sunsets almost every evening. The temperatures and rainfall are more moderate during the winter months, yet the ocean temperatures remain warm for swimming all year long.

Puerto Vallarta has recently spent over 6 million dollars on water treatment and purification plants to provide the town with pure clean water, and has earned several awards for it's clean water supply. So the days of visiting PV and worrying about health issues are largely a thing of the past.

In many ways there are two Puerto Vallartas. The original quaint town on either side of the Rio Cuale is still the main tourist focus, and will always be a special area. Nuevo Vallarta and Marina Vallarta represent the future growth areas for Puerto Vallarta. This collection of hotels, condos and all-inclusive properties run along 10 miles of coastline north of Puerto Vallarta.

Marina Vallarta is the newest and most upscale development in the Puerto Vallarta area. Located about 8 miles up the bay form PV, Marina Vallarta offers 5-star hotels, condominiums, a golf course and a full-facility marina. Other activities in the area include everything from bullfights to discos!

The coastline south of Puerto Vallarta offers mile after mile of unspoiled beaches, along with some of Mexico's most exclusive resorts!

About 90 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta visitors can enjoy the remote coatal area of PUNTA EL CUSTODIO. This is wildlife conservation area includes summer turtle research, bird watching plus whale watching in winter.

To get a feel of how Puerto Vallarta is laid out along Banderas Bay take a look at this MAP OF PUERTO VALLARTA.

To dip into "Puerto Vallarta" time, head to Rio Cuale Island located near the southern part of downtown Puerto Vallarta near the coast. The west end of this island offers views of Bahia de Banderas and the local beaches. Walking a bit inland from this coastal view Rio Cuale offers restaurants, shops and shady gardens...a fun place to walk around and get acquainted with "PV". For a fun view of all the beach action walk south 3 blocks to oceanfront Carlos n' Charlie's! From the upstairs tables you can see everything!

For a fun half day or full day excursion head down the coastal road to Mismaloya Beach. This small fishing village has a great beach and is the perfect place to have a hot lunch and a cold drink! There are several small palapa-covered restaurants on the beach just waiting for you, and a refreshing dip in the ocean is hard to resist! Snorkel trips to nearby Los Arcos are only $8.00 if you have your own mask and snorkel, $16.00 if you don't!

Another Hot Tip for those with an appetite is just 10 minutes up the road from Mismaloya. Chico's Paradise is located less than 10 miles from downtown PV but it feels light-years away. The restaurant is built into granite rocks above a river, and taking a dip in the pools and waterfalls is encouraged! For a table with the best view of the waterfall enter the restaurant and hang a hard right. The palapa on the point is right above the river with spectacular waterfall views! Be sure to get to Chico's Paradise before the big lunch crowd gets there!

Fantastic beaches are one of the main attractions that put Puerto Vallarta on the map! These beaches are wide, clean and beautiful, and are perfect for sunning or water sports! The bay protects most of the beaches from Pacific waves, and the warm waters are a real joy to swim in all year long.

Remember all beaches in Mexico are open to the public. So if you notice a slice of coastal paradise that you want to explore...feel free. Be aware, however, that much of the land fronting these beautiful beaches is privately owned, and care must be taken to respect the rights of these property owners as you access the coast.

The ocean water temperatures off of Puerto Vallarta are warm enough for swimming all year long. The water temperature tops out in the high 80's by the end of summer, gradually cooling to the low 70's by March or April. If you haven't gone swimming in warm ocean waters (day or night) Puerto Vallarta is ready to accommodate you!

About 90 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta visitors can enjoy the remote coatal area of PUNTA EL CUSTODIO. This is wildlife conservation area includes summer turtle research, bird watching plus whale watching in winter.

It's fun to review the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Puerto Vallarta.

For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo.

There is a pier in Puerto Vallarta at the foot of Francisca Rodriguez which compliments the facilities in Marina Vallarta north of town.

Northern Beaches and Southern Beaches.

NORTHERN BEACHES

The northern beaches are the beaches that start just north of town and go all the way up to the northern part of the bay at Punta Mita. While these beaches do offer clean white sand, they do lack the unique jungle environment found in the southern beaches.

North to south:

  • NUEVO VALLARTA BEACHES

Located next to the Nuevo Vallarta Marina.
The further you get from the marina entrance the better the beaches area.

  • PLAYA DE ORO

Located north of town below the cruise ship docks.
Great beaches with hotels right behind the sand. Lots of action!

  • PLAYA LAS GLORIAS

Located in front of the Plaza las Glorias Hotel.
Nice sand and a good swimming beach.

  • PLAYA CAMARONES

Located just north of town, the closest beach accessible from downtown as you head north.
A good beach attracting locals and tourists...busy on weekends.

SOUTHERN BEACHES

Southern beaches start at downtown Puerto Vallarta and head south all the way to Mismaloya Beach. If you are looking for even more remote beaches, there are more than a few located further south, from Mismaloya to Costa Careyes. Some of the closer remote beaches are accessible by boat. Hard to get to...keeps the crowds away!

For a fun "beach road trip" head south to Playa Tenacatitia, about an hour and a half south of Puerto Vallarta. This is the tropical beach you have always dreamed of! Your boss will wonder why you never returned from your Puerto Vallarta vacation!

  • PLAYA DE LOS MUERTES

Located just south of town, accessed by Calle Olas Altus.
A good beach for just hanging out and getting sun.
Not as good for swimming because it is so close to the river.
Can get somewhat crowded and very active on weekends.

  • PLAYAS CONCHAS CHINAS

Located approximately one mile south of Playa de los Muertes.
A series of small beaches and coves within walking distance to town. Easy access down from Highway 200.
Good for relaxing, surf fishing, and minor snorkel excursions.
Most popular because of their proximity to town.

  • PLAYA EL GATO

Located about 2 miles south of town off of Highway 200, just south of the Hotel Camino Real.
A very pleasant beach for sunbathing and relaxing.
Used by the locals and tourists alike. For more privacy walk 200 yards north to the beach at Hotel Camino Real.

  • PLAYA LOS VENADOS

Located one half mile south of Playa el Gato.
A beautiful beach more prone to locals, especially on weekend.

  • PLAYA LOS CARRIZOS

Located about a mile past the Hotel Camino Real.
    Another quiet beach, rarely crowded.

  • PLAYA LOS ARCOS

Located just past popular Mismaloya Beach, past the Mismaloya River.
The main attraction here is the incredible rocks just offshore,
which offer waters perfect for snorkeling. Watch for boat traffic as this is a popular spot!

  • MISMALOYA BEACH

Located about 6 miles south of town, off of Mexico Highway 200.
A beautiful protected cove with clear water and white sand surrounded by a lush green jungle.
Small restaurants at the south end of the beach.

  • BOCA DE TOMATLAN

Located three miles south of Mismaloya.
A remote jungle-fringed beach and river mouth where you can rent boats to explore beaches further south!

  • PLAYA LAS ANIMAS

Located south along the coast from Boca de Tomatlan.
A beach paradise! A quiet beach with seafood palapa restaurants and wonderful snorkeling.
Don't tell anyone...this is one of PV's best beaches!

  • PLAYA QUIMEXTO

    Located south of Las Animas.
A very remote beach with few crowds, accessible by boat.
A nearby waterfall is a great place to cool off!

  • PLAYA YALAPA

Located 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, accessible only by boat.
This clear warm cove surrounded by verdant green hills is home to a few dozen Mexican families and a few ex-patriots from the U.S.
Accessible only by boat, Yelapa will take you back in time to a much slower pace. Palapa restaurants are located on the beach, and a waterfall cascades in the hills above the beach. Overnight rustic accommodations are available at Hotel Lagunitas for about $25 U.S. per night by calling 011-52 (329) 8-0554.

  • PLAYA CALETAS

    Located south of Las Animas.
45 minutes south of downtown Puerto Vallarta.
Remote yet refined. The perfect combination. Paradise!
This beach is a secret so we can't tell you where it is.

Puerto Vallarta offers everything from funky single-level hotels to first class high-rise resorts. Most of the larger hotels are located right on the beach!

For years most of the lodging in Puerto Vallarta was either very near town or just south of town along the jungled road. During the last 10 years many new resorts and developments have been built north of town. While not as 'tropical' these resorts are newer and very nice.

Visitors can also choose from a decent selection of condos and apartments in town, near the Rio Cuale area. Most of these units do not have pools, but they are within walking distance to the beach.

SOUTHERN HOTELS

The area south of Puerto Vallarta is where the first luxury hotels were built outside of downtown Puerto Vallarta. These hotels are generally not new like some of the hotels north of town, but are very well maintained. The hotels south of town offer a tropical environment with a very 'old Mexico' charm and feel to them, and are the first choice for travelers who want to get away from the crowds.

Visit CONDOS IN VALLARTA for a taste of vacation property on the south side of Puerto Vallarta. Rentals available!

For more information on exclusive boutique hotels along Mexico's Costa Alegre visit the web site of MEXICO BOUTIQUE HOTELS. Both the exclusive El Tamarindo and the El Careyes Beach Resort await you on this magnificent stretch of coast!

Information on luxury villas for rent in the Puerto Vallarta area can be reviewed on the web sites of CASA VALERIE and VILLAS DE ORO.

The other great thing about the location is the great private cove that this hotel is located on. It's like being on a semi-deserted Pacific beach, with all of the amenities of a first class hotel!

DOWNTOWN HOTELS

There are many advantages of staying in a hotel downtown, not to mention the affordable rates. Most of the downtown hotels are within a short walking distance to the many shops and restaurants in town, and usually not more than a 10 to 15 minute walk to excellent beaches. Staying in town gives the traveler a much better feel for the town, it's people and the day to day culture of Puerto Vallarta.

DIVING

Good diving locations in the Puerto Vallarta area include the clear water, rock formations and colorful fish of LOS ARCOS (south of town - off of Mismaloya Beach), ISLAS MARIETAS (north of town - off of Punta de Mita) and PUNTA MITA (at the far northern end of the bay). Underwater life can include dolphins, manta rays, and migrating humpback whales! EL MORRO is a pinnacle dive located 26 miles off of Puerto Vallarta, and CHIMO is another intimate dive location not far from town. Sea life at both locations is abundant!

For a fast and easy snorkel trip take a taxi to Mismaloya Beach and hire a panga to take you to nearby Los Arcos. The boat rate is under $8 per person, and you can rent a mask and snorkel for another $8 per person.

FISHING

The waters off of Puerto Vallarta are full of life! Long before the tourists hit the cobblestone streets of PV many of the local inhabitants made their living from the sea.

Each year the International Sailfish Tournament takes place during the first week in November, offering big bucks and tons of fun!

Catch and Release is encouraged if you are not planning on eating what you catch. Inform your skipper of your intentions up front, and then again when your hook-up has been reviewed boat-side.

Although boat fishing is usually necessary for large game fish, surf fishing is productive on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta. The rocks at the south end of town often feature sierra, mullet, pargo and torito.

Fishing packages to Puerto Vallarta can also be arranged with CASS TOURS and REEL ONE IN. Check out their web sites!

SAILING

Each year the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Sailing Regatta starts during the fall. This event brings in blue-water sailors from all over the world and the party afterwards is world-class!

Most sailors hit Puerto Vallarta after cruising down the BAJA coast and then running across from CABO SAN LUCAS or LA PAZ. Boaters looking to travel in Mexican waters can increase the safety and enjoyment of their adventure by keeping a copy of MEXICO BOATING GUIDE and CHARLIE'S CHARTS on board. Both of these publications contain a wealth of information for the Mexico sailor. GERRY CHARTS by good old Gerry are another great option.

For boat permits and entry documents contact ROMERO'S MEXICO SERVICE.

Pirate ship sailing in the waters off of Puerto Vallarta can be enjoyed with MARIGALANTE CRUISES 011-52 (322) 223-0875.

SURFING

Banderas Bay does not receive most swells hitting Mexico's west coast. The closest good surf break to downtown PV is PUNTA MITA, the furthest point north on Banderas Bay. This point break is exposed to west and south swells. A wet suit is rarely required as the water temperature in Puerto Vallarta usually bottoms out in the low 70's in late winter / early spring and heats up to the mid to high 80's in late summer!

BARRELHUNTERS SURF TOURS offers safe guided surf tours in mainland Mexico. Check out thier web site!

Visit HORIZONS WEST for information on surf expeditions north of Puerto Vallarta.

Also located on the mainland north of P.V. is COSTA AZUL surf resort, a great place for surfers looking for a relaxed surfing environment.

Check it out! SURFSIPUEDES!.

Drop in on the web site of SURFARIMEX for additional information on surf tours into Mexico!

SIESTAS & OLAS is a very fun film about surfing Mexico. The action in the film starts off with epic Baja at Scorpion Bay, and then transitions to the awesome sliders and bone crunchers of mainland Mexico. The film was produced by Dan-O Surf Films in Santa Barbara, California (by Dan Wosniak), and can be purchased on video and DVD at your local surf shop or by visiting their web site. See it and feel good.

And for a good time on-line drop your Sex Wax and check out the Reef Brazil girls at the REEF web site.

SWELL.COM always has good stuff to check out when you can't go surfing and need your fix.

Leave your wet suit at home and grab your rash guard. The OCEAN TEMPERATURES in Mexico are nice all year long!

Puerto Vallarta offers many excellent dining options...everything from casual eateries to elegant and expensive. Don't take the easy way out and eat all of your meals in the hotel you are staying in! Get out there and explore!

During the 1990's Puerto Vallarta went on a multi-million dollar clean water campaign to provide exceptionally safe water for tourists and residents. This plan has been very effective, and most of the intestinal problems that had been experienced by Puerto Vallarta travelers in the past are no longer a factor.

For a fun walkabout and dining excursion on the south end of town check out the RIVER CUALE ISLAND area. Restaurants mixed with shops in an intimate park-like setting make for a fun shopping experience.

Another "restaurant row" in town is Calle Basilio Badilo, running 3 blocks between Pino Suarez and Avenida Insurgentes. Fares include seafood, Mexican food, as well as Argentenian dishes and much more.

The accepted dress code in Puerto Vallarta is "vacation casual". You can get dressed up if you want to, but you can get dressed down and nobody will care.!

Like most Mexican resorts tipping is appreciated in Puerto Vallarta. If you have had a waiter or waitress who has gone out of his or her way to make your dining experience exceptional, tipping is a gracious way to say thank you. A normal tip is about 10% and more for great service.

Looking for a fun restaurant in downtown PV with killer views of the Malecon action? Cheeseburger in Paradise and Carlos O'Brien's are the Hot Tips! Each of these two restaurants has upstairs tables with wonderful views!

If you have come to Puerto Vallarta to party, you have come to the right place! The night life in Puerto Vallarta is legendary and world-class. In fact, if you do it as well as the locals do, you will very likely see the sun rise before your head finally hits your pillow!

Although there is some action prior to midnight, things really get down from midnight to 4 a.m. The locals are into disco music big time, so don't expect the DJ to play Mick Jagger or Smash Mouth. Staying up late and dancing is the perfect excuse for laying low pool-side in the morning!

Don't expect to be able to get in to a disco with shorts and a T-shirt... dress codes take a notch up in the evening, especially at the discos. Expect to pay a moderate cover charge at most discos, although it is usually well worth it!

If you are out for a night of clubbing in PV do yourself and everyone else in town a favor...take a taxi. The parking in downtown is very tight and taxis make an evening on the town that much more fun.

One more thing. Yes, it is tempting to dance and drink until 4 a.m. but getting too wiped out to crawl to the pool or the beach the next morning is a bummer!

And for those of you that are curious...yes the '100 Mile Rule' is in effect for visitors to PV The hundred mile rule states that there are 'no' rules when you are least 100 miles from home. This is similar to the 'Mexico Rule' which states that 'whatever happens in Mexico stays in Mexico.' Ole!

Contact PUERTO VALLARTA TOURS for more fun things to do at night in PV!

Shopping is almost a recreation in Puerto Vallarta! The town is loaded with shops of all kinds, with merchandise from many different parts of Mexico and Central America. Jewelry, clothing, furniture, leather goods, pottery and ceramics and lots of hats!

All shops take pesos, the vast majority take U.S. dollars, and an increasing number of shops will now accept credit cards. If you are paying in U.S. dollars you'll have better luck if you have smaller currency. Larger bills such as $50's and $100's will get you smiles but probably not much change. Bring lots of $1's, $5's and $10's from home.

Although some degree of price negotiations is expected at the smaller and family-run shops, prices are not as flexible in the larger and nicer shops.

Looking for a great inexpensive gift that is easy to pack in you luggage? Stop by one of the three Carlos n' Charlie's Official Restaurant Stores for a fun tee-shirt!

Getting to and getting around Puerto Vallarta is fun! There are only a few airlines that fly into the area, all of them are listed below. And once you arrive in town, think about the possibility of renting a car. Although you may not need a car for your entire stay, you may want to take a one day excursion up or down the coast to discover a deserted beach or a sleepy fishing village!

The main road along the beach in downtown PV is packed with cars almost all of the time. This road is the southbound road, and the northbound road is two blocks inland. If you are not in a hurry this southbound road is nothin' but fun if you want to watch the beachfront action. Tourists and locals walk the Malecon on the west side and shops and restaurants line the east side of this busy street.

Don't want to get behind the wheel of a car? (I know...you're on vacation!) No Worries! Puerto Vallarta is set up perfectly for the immobile. Taxis are the perfect way to take those short hops to dinner and shopping. And even a reasonable way to connect between parts of town for those half-day excursions!

To get a feel of how Puerto Vallarta is laid out along Banderas Bay take a look at this MAP OF PUERTO VALLARTA.

AIRLINE INFORMATION

Puerto Vallarta's airport is officially called Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport. It is located on the main highway about 4 miles (7 kilometers) north of downtown. Although many flights to Puerto Vallarta go through Mexico City, an increasing number of airlines are now providing direct flights.

Getting from the airport to the tourist areas is easy. "Collectivos" operated by Mexico's transportation arm provide shared van rides from the airport on a regular basis. They are stationed in front of the airport and depart as soon as they become full! In addition to the collectivos, private taxis are also available for a higher fee.

If you think you may need the services of an emergency Air Evacuation company while visiting Mexico visit the web site of SKY MED INTERNATIONAL or call them at (800) 475-9633 for additional information.

BUSES

City buses pick up and drop off locals and tourists at most points along the Banderas Bay and downtown. Most rides around town are less than 50 cents U.S. The local bus station is located on Avenida Olas Altas at Plaza Lazaro Cardenas, a few blocks south of the Rio Cuale tourist area. Buses traverse the Mexican coastline and service is also available to Aguacalientes, Guadalajara and Mexico City. There is no central bus station in town, but most of the smaller bus stations are located in the downtown Puerto Vallarta area along the Avenida Insurgentes. Deluxe bus service is available by the Elite bus company at 011-52 (322) 3-1117.

CAR RENTALS

Car rentals are easy in Puerto Vallarta, but not a necessity. They can add depth and convenience to a Puerto Vallarta vacation for those Mexico adventurers looking to head up or down the coast, and who don't mind the cost. If you do decide to rent a car from the git-go, rental cars are available at the airport. Your rates may be cheaper if you reserve your rental car in advance, before you arrive in Puerto Vallarta. If you decide to go car-less for most of your trip, but want to rent a car for a one day excursion, most hotels have car rentals available in house.

Keep in mind that there are only three gasoline stations in town, and plan your driving accordingly. One gas station is located on the north end of town near the cruise ship terminal entrance, one is located in the heart of downtown, and one is located at the south end of town as you begin to head south.

Parking in downtown PV can be quiet a challenge. Like Manhattan Island, New York or Manhattan Beach, California, parking spaces are a true prize! If you get one you can write it off to some of that good karma coming back at you!

When driving around the Puerto Vallarta area there is one road that runs along the coast, serving all of the beaches and hotels along the coastal area. This road changes names many times, and is commonly called Carretera Aeropuerto (the Airport Road) because it also connect to the airport which is north of town.

When driving in PV it is also nice to be aware of a road that circumnavigates the congested hub of town, if your quest is just to head north or south around the town. The "Libramiento" bypass starts at the south end of town just up the hill (southeast) of Cuale Island at Venustiano Carranza and and drops you back along the coast near the Plaza las Glorias Hotel north of town. The only disadvantage of taking this shortcut is that you miss all the fun action of cruising the downtown area.

Car rentals are available at the airport, most larger hotels, and at the small shopping area near the cruise ship terminal.

For and exciting adventure in the PV outback try OFFROAD TOURS at 011-52 (322) 222-0918 or e-mail at circuloxoffroad@pvnet.com.mx. Other options include SAN SEBASTIAN JEEP TOURS at 011-52 (322) 225-2270 and PATHFINDERS at 011-52 (322) 222-1875.

ATV's can be rented at WILD ATV TOURS located just north of town by calling 011-52 (322) 224-2118.

CRUISE SHIPS

Puerto Vallarta is a major port of call in Mexico, with most of the cruise ships coming down the west coast from Los Angeles, California. These massive cruise ships usually dock north of downtown at the Maritime Terminal at Marina Vallarta. Most ships cruise the Mexican shoreline at about 25 miles per hour, within 5 to 25 miles offshore.

The dock area offers small curious shops, a shop offering e-mail and long distance telephone service, and 4 pay telephones (telephone card required). There are also a few companies at the terminal entrance that offer rental cars, as well as a good Mexican (what else?) restaurant.
For more affordable Internet access walk about 200 yards east of the cruise ship area on the south side of the street. Coffee, orange juice and rolls are available while you surf the Net and check your e-mail. Internet access is about $2.00 for 30 minutes.
Taxis are also available out front. Plan on spending $15 dollars for a cab to town, $20 for a ride to Mismaloya Beach and $25 to Chico's Paradise for lunch! The rules state that only white taxis can pick up cruise ship customers at the cruise dock but any taxi (yellow or white) can return cruise passengers to the dock area.

MARINA INFORMATION

Marina Vallarta is located just north of the city of Puerto Vallarta. It is a relatively new development which includes a 500 slip marina (electric, water and cable TV included with the slips!), condos, hotels, golf. The marina also offers most marine services necessary for power boats and sailboat heading up and down the coast. Many of PV's water oriented excursions depart from this marina.

Boaters looking for a great book on cruising the coast of Mexico would do well to pick up a copy of MEXICO BOATING GUIDE by Captains John and Pat Rains. This excellent book has all of the information needed to cruise Mexican waters.

Carlos Fiesta used this book when he traveled solo 2,000 from Los Angeles to San Felipe in a 19 foot panga! Check out BAJA CIRCUMNAVIGATION!

EL MEDICO MARINE SUPPLY in Marina Vallarta offers supplies, mini-mart, deli, fishing gear, marine hardware, oil and more 011-52 (332) 221-2425.

TAXI SERVICE

If you don't want to bother with renting a car while you are in Puerto Vallarta taxis are very available in and around town. If you are planning to travel from one place in town to another, plan on spending around $5.00 U.S. for a taxi. Longer trips to hotels north or south of town might run $10 to $20 U.S. depending on how far from town. Tips are appreciated, and most taxi drivers are very nice. Be sure to confirm a price for your destination before you get in the cab. It's pretty tough to negotiate prices while you are speeding along the highway in a strange land!

Taxis are usually available at the airport, at the front of most larger hotels and restaurants, and at the cruise ship terminal at the north end of town.

TOURS

If you want to see more of the PV area without all of the planning, consider taking a tour! Tours can be arranged at the front desk of most of the larger hotels in town and at the local travel agencies.

Puerto Vallarta real estate is active in both the condo and luxury single family home markets. Most of the tourist real estate activity in Puerto Vallarta is centered on the newly developed Marina north of town, although there are some newer homes along the coast south of town. There are also some new and re-sale time shares available, if you just want to own a slice of Paradise!

Visit CONDOS IN VALLARTA for a taste of vacation property on the south side of Puerto Vallarta. Rentals available!

REAL ESTATE BROKERS

Most of the real estate Brokers in Puerto Vallarta speak English. Doing your homework on the Internet before hitting town is an efficient way to learn more about the market and a good way to search for an agent.

PROPERTIES FOR SALE

To allow more carefree time while on vacation, more people are choosing condos as a way to buy into the PV real estate market. Although some of the villas north and south of Puerto Vallarta are nothing short of spectacular, the new condo projects north of town are a more affordable way to own a piece of Paradise.

Although you might be tempted to pull up a towel on the beach or by the pool and just relax during your stay in Puerto Vallarta, there are several interesting places to visit while you are in town.

  • GRINGO GULCH

Much of Puerto Vallarta's fame began when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got together and filmed "Night of the Iguana" here. The residential area where they lived, now called Gringo Gulch, is still an upscale neighborhood of vacation homes for well-to-do Americans and Mexicans. Sitting just above the Cuale River on the south side of town, this can be a fun area to walk around and burn off some calories form that huge dinner you just finished! Tours of Casa Kimberly, a private home converted to a museum across the street from the Taylor/Burton home can be arranged by calling 011-52 (322) 222-1336.

  • MALECON STROLL

Every Sunday night at sunset the locals and tourists collect on Paseo Diaz Ordaz, which is the Malecon that runs along the waterfront in town. You've traveled thousands of miles from home...gone through all the drama and trouble to get packed up and fly here. It's time for a "two-fer". That's a "two for one" adventure that you just can't pass up. Take a gander at these nearby destinations to get your imagination running...P.S. If you are only in town for a couple of days you might want to pass on the nearby excursions this time. But when you come back for a longer stay...keep these destinations in mind!

  • BOCA DE TOMATLAN

Located 10 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, off of Mexico Highway 200.
The quaint village of Boca de Tomatlan is located at the mouth of the Rio Tomatlan in a tropical garden setting. Pools, huge rocks and raw jungle are the order of the day.
The small sheltered beach is perfect for a quiet day of reading or relaxing. Pangas on the beach for rent will take you to an even more remote beach further southwest, Playa Las Animas.
    An easy half day getaway!

  • BUCERIAS

Located just north of Nuevo Vallarta.
This small village is a great place to go for a half day excursion or a meal. It offers cobblestone streets, family run small hotels, restaurants and private villas. Strolling around town brings you back to the earlier days of Puerto Vallarta.

  • SAYULITA

Located 22 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, on the coast.
A beautiful coastal fishing village rich in tropical vegetation and beautiful views of Banderas Bay! Activities here include kayaking, hiking and mountain biking and surfing. For comfortable overnight accommodations on the village beach try Papa's Palapas (805) 473-5300 or 011 52 (322) 275-0082.

  • YELAPA

Located south of Puerto Vallarta, accessible by boat only, via the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal. Bookings through travel agencies or hotel excursion offices are common.
Because access is via boat, many visitors to Yalapa feel that it
is an island destination. Although it feels like an island,
it is really a remote stretch of beach paradise on the coast south
of Puerto Vallarta. If you want to 'drop out' for an afternoon,
this is the place to do it. If you want to really drop out,
rustic bungalows are available for overnight stays!

When Puerto Vallarta first became popular in the 1970's, one of the nice features about slipping into "PV mode" was that you left the rest of the world behind. Communicating with the outside world was almost impossible! Well, thanks to technology, satellites and the Internet, if you choose to keep in touch while on vacation you know have that option.

Long distance phone calls have gotten more affordable and the quality of the calls has increased significantly. Be sure to bring your ATT calling card information from home to obtain the best calling rates.

Internet Cafe's are now easy to find in town, and the rates have gotten competitive. You can expect to pay about $3.00 U.S. for 30 minutes of e-mail time, and most of the servers are relatively slow.

For the new dialing instructions from the United States to Mexico, as well as the new Mexico area codes you can call AT&T at (800) 869-1707 or drop by their Mexico dialing instructions web site at MEXICO DIALING INFO.

For more information on telephone calls, e-mail access and more drop by our main COMMUNICATION section in Mexico Expo!

We have designed this section of our Puerto Vallarta Travel Guide to help you with commonly asked questions about this particular part of Mexico. It's always a good idea to sharpen up your learning curve before you start your vacation!

  • Carlos;

I keep hearing about a place in the jungle south of Puerto Vallarta called Chico's Paradise. Would that be a good place to go to for lunch? - John

    John;

Chico's Paradise is one of Puerto Vallarta's unique treasures... and a perfect destination for a lunch excursion! The setting is a bolder-cluttered river bed set in a lush green jungle with wading pools of mountain water. There is a restaurant just above the pools offering a decent menu and a variety of drinks! Try the palapa table at the lower west end for the best waterfall views at lunch.

  • Carlos:

Friends of mine had visited Puerto Vallarta many years ago and several of them had gotten very sick. I only get one vacation each year and I don't want to waste it feeling sick. What are my chances of staying healthy? - Vicky

    Vicky;

Your concern is a valid, but much has changed in Puerto Vallarta over the years to increase your likelihood of a healthy trip. For years it wasn't unusual for a tourist to pick up a parasite or bacteria that laid them flat for days. In some instances as many as 25% of the visitors were experiencing some degree of illness. I am happy to report that things have improved considerably in town during the past decade. Although getting sick is still a small possibility, it is more likely that you will not get sick either during or after your trip to PV Keep in mind that excessive sun and alcohol combined with spicy foods and a lack of sleep can really keep your body's normal defense mechanisms to a minimum. Taking it slow and easy will help ensure a healthy trip. - Carlos

  • Carlos:

We are booking a vacation to Puerto Vallarta and would like to stay in a nice hotel away from the busy downtown areas. We would prefer an upper end hotel on a great beach. Any suggestions? - Robert

    Robert;

One of your choices is the Westin Camino Real, about 10 minutes south of town. This is a first class hotel and is located on a private beach with very little other activity. Also it's close enough to town where you can easily head in for a great dinner or nightlife. The new Sheraton at Punta Mita is also a class act.

Welcome to the tropics! If you like warm weather, you'll love Puerto Vallarta!
The weather is warm all year long, if not a bit hot during the summer time. Evenings are always enjoyable, especially in a town that welcomes casual dress. During the rainy season from July through September you can expect some rain in the late afternoon, usually for just a couple of hours. This makes for excellent sunsets!

One of the wonderful things about being this far south is the warm ocean temperature. The water along the Puerto Vallarta coast is warm enough for swimming all year long even for the most timid gringo! As a matter of fact, in the middle of summer the ocean temperature is downright hot!

Check out today's PUERTO VALLARTA WEATHER.

For the bigger picture check out the SATELLITE VIEW of the weather in Mexico.

Also it's fun to review the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Puerto Vallarta and other parts of Mexico.
