The World Heritage List was established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) at it's 17th General Conference in 1972. The list of sites is updated annually. There are 730 places on the planet Earth that the World Heritage Committee has decided are so special that they have been designated as World Heritage Sites. These locations are recognized as unique geographic, cultural and mixed sites, and are given special government consideration. Mexico currently has 22 World Heritage Site locations throughout the country. Two are located on the Baja Peninsula, several are located on the Yucatan Peninsula, and the majority are located throughout mainland Mexico. Each of the locations listed below is linked to the World Heritage Site web site containing additional information on that specific site. For additional information visit the World Heritage Site web site. For additional information on colonial buildings in the country visit the EXPLORING COLONIAL MEXICO web site. More information on Mexico's colonial towns can be reviewed at MEXICO'S COLONIAL TOWNS.
