Mexico offers some of the best fishing on the planet! Because most of the country is located in the tropics, the ocean waters along most of Mexico's coastline are warm all year long and are home to a large variety of game fish.

This section of Mexico Expo was designed to provide the angler with a variety of fishing information before heading south for tight lines. Be sure to utilize the various links throughout this site for additional Mexico fishing information.

MEXICO FISHING INFORMATION AND LINKS

There is probably no other country on the planet as famous for recreational fishing as Mexico. Fishermen who just want to sneak away for a few days often head for the BAJA PENINSULA for tight lines. More serious anglers looking for fighting game fish and sailfish slip a little further south to CABO SAN LUCAS and the MEXICAN MAINLAND. For hook-ups in a Caribbean environment CANCUN is also a great fishing destination.

There are many web sites on the Internet that offer good fishing information for Mexico. For fishing in the border regions of Baja just below San Diego the web site of BITE'S ON is full of excellent fishing information. A very good site for the Baja Peninsula is BAJA DESTINATIONS by fishing legend Gene Kira. For fishing information at the Cape LOS CABOS FISHING REPORT is a good source of current information. Mainland fishing information can be reviewed at PUERTO PENSACO web site for the northern mainland area. For fishing in the Mazatlan area NEPTUNE FISHING ADVENTURES can be a good contact. Visit the web site of REEL 1 IN for fishing options in Puerto Vallarta and IXtapa/Zihuatanejo. And for fishing in the Cancun area TEQUILA SUNRISE SPORTFISHING specializes in fishing south of Cancun in Puerto Aventura.

Fishing in Mexico has definite seasons for different fish. And the OCEAN TEMPERATURES have a lot to do with who is biting where.

Although fishing without reservations is usually a good way to try your luck, each year more anglers are setting up their trips before they head to Mexico. Below we have listed some of the companies that specialize in Mexico mainland fishing.

Catch and Release is a practice that is becoming increasingly common im Mexico. In an effort to make sure tomorrow's fishermen (and women!) will have plenty of fish to catch, more fishermen each year are bringing the fish up to the boat, giving it a kiss, and then releasing it back into the ocean. For the most part Catch and Release is a voluntary act and the decision whether to bring a fish on board or release it is the fisherman's decision. It's always a good idea to give the captain of the boat a head's up of your intentions before you hook-up. Landing a fish is still common practice in Mexico, but there are times when it makes good sense to cut them free for another day. A good example is when you have caught your limit but it is too early to end your fishing adventure. There is no limit to the number of fish that can be caught and released!

Fishermen heading out for longer stays in Mexico waters can't go wrong taking along a copy of MEXICO BOATING GUIDE, a great book with information on the entire coastline of Mexico. Another good book is CHARLIE'S CHARTS. Both books are great, and Carlos Fiesta used both books for reference during his solo 2,000 mile BAJA CIRCUMNAVIGATION in a 19 foot fishing panga!

BAJA DIRECTIONS offers an excellent selection of maps of the coastline around Mexico...perfect for keeping your edge on the competiton.

Visit HORIZONS WEST for information on fly fishing expeditions in mainland Mexico.

Drop by YACHT PATH INTERNATIONAL for information on having your yacht professionally shipped to Mexico.

MEXICO OCEAN TEMPERATURES

Much of what is happening with fishing in Mexico is determined by the ocean water temperatures. And although fishing can be good in the cooler northern latitudes in Mexico such as northern Baja and the upper Sea of Cortez regions, generally speaking fishing improves in Mexico as you head south into the warmer waters.

The northern Baja Peninsula's ocean water temperatures rarely get past the 70 degree mark on the Pacific Ocean side. However, just a hundred miles away in the Sea of Cortez ocean temperatures reach well into the 80 degree range in late summer and then drop into the 60 degree range by late March.

Mainland Mexico offers warm ocean temperatures all year long and ocean temperatures in the southern coastal reaches head up towards 90 degrees in late summer. Things cool off by winter and eventually drop below 75 degrees by late winter.

For an up to date review of the ocean temperatures in all Mexican waters, as well in other areas of the world, check out this colorful graph of MEXICO OCEAN TEMPERATURES.

MEXICO WEATHER INFORMATION

The climate in Mexico is generally hot and conducive to good fishing. It's usually a good idea to take a look at the current weather at the destination in Mexico you are headed for to prepare for your fishing adventure.

The summer storm and hurricane season in Mexico generally runs from June through October. After October the ocean water temperatures begin to drop to a point where large weather systems cannot be sustained. Most of these storm systems last just a few days and range in intensity from mild to extreme.

For additional information on the weather in Mexico visit the WEATHER AND CLIMATE section of Mexico Expo.

BAJA PENINSULA FISHING INFORMATION

Baja is a popular fishing destination in Mexico and for several good reasons. Whether it is a day trip to the Coronado Islands or Ensenada just south of San Diego, a road trip further south to San Quintin or Bahia de los Angeles, or a fly down trip to Loreto or La Paz, most fishing trips to Baja are fun and very productive.

For additional information on fishing in Baja visit the FISHING section of Baja Expo.

For fishing information at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula at the Cape vist the FISHING section of Cabo Expo.

Some of Baja's fishing destinations, such as La Paz and San Jose del Cabo, offer a variety of things to do after a hard day of fishing. Other Baja locations, such as Bahia de los Angeles and the East Cape, offer a much slower pace and they roll up the sidewalks by 10:00 p.m. So pick your Baja fishing location with all of your options in mind.

MAINLAND MEXICO FISHING INFORMATION

Mainland Mexico offers several excellent destinations for fishing. These west coast cities have been hosting fishermen and fishing tournaments for decades and fishing is a big part of the local economies.

Some fishing trips are arranged before arriving at the desired Mexican destination, others are set up after arriving in town. For anglers looking to hook up with a specific boat or captain making a reservation in advance provides peace of mind. However there are many people to head to Mexican fishing resorts and simply hire a boat and captain a day or two before they want to go out.

Sailfish are popular off of Mexico's mainland, as are other warm water fish such as yellowtail, dorado and wahoo. If the big guys aren't biting (rare) there are always bottom fish looking for a meal.

Some mainland resorts even offer freshwater fishing, such as Lake Guerrero. BORDER EXCURSIONS runs freshwater fishing adventures into Lake Guerrero and more information is available on their web site. MEXICO BASS FISHING ADVENTURES also offers tours to Mexico's freshwater lakes.

Flyfishing is gaining in popularity in Mexico, both on inland lakes as well as saltwater flyfishing in the ocean. If you are looking for a new twist on an old sport this might be just the thing! For custom made flys contact Pam Bolles at BAJA BIG FISH.

Catch and release got a big push in Cabo San Lucas in the late 1990's and has caught on in mainland Mexico as well. The decision to keep a fish or set it free is usually made by the client (that would be you). So if you have a desire to let most of the fish you catch go be sure to inform your captain before you get tight lines.

After a hard day of fishing and drinking beer most mainland Mexico locations offer excellent dining and nightlife. If you do your Mexican fishing adventure the right way you will need a vacation when you get home!

The PUERTO PENSACO web site offers fishing information on the northern mainland area. For fishing in the Mazatlan area NEPTUNE FISHING ADVENTURES can be a good contact. Visit the web site of REEL 1 IN for fishing options in Puerto Vallarta and IXtapa/Zihuatanejo.

CANCUN-YUCATAN FISHING INFORMATION

Cancun is the headquarters for western Caribbean fishing! Although most people think of Cancun as a resort set up for family and Spring Break vacations, fishing in the waters off Cancun are excellent for a variety of fish.

There are several marina facilities in Cancun, as well as a number of companies that specialize in fishing for visitors. Unlike fishing in Baja and Cabo San Lucas where half of the fishing fleet is panagas, most of the fishing boats in Cancun are cabin cruisers.

The latitude of Cancun provides warm water all year long. The ocean temperatures tend to peak in late September in the mid 80 degree range, and then the currents bring the water temperature down to the mid 70's by the end of winter.

The currents in the waters off of Cancun usually run from south to north, bringing nutrient-rich waters up the coast along the Belizian Reef and continuing past Isla Cozumel to Cancun.

Sail fish are often found in these waters, especially in late summer and early fall. Bottom fish are also prevalent. There are also sharks in the waters east on Cancun.

The channel between Cancun and Isla Mujeres is fairly shallow, but the channel between Cancun and Isla Cozumel is somewhat deeper. Many of the fishing companies head out past these islands for the larger catches.

Fishermen looking for a slower pace often consider setting up in the sleepy island of Cozumel, about 30 miles souteast of Cancun. Available by either plane or ferry, Cozumel offers a more relaxed pace along with the sale fishing options available out of Cancun.

TEQUILA SUNRISE SPORTFISHING specializes in fishing south of Cancun in Puerto Aventura.

Take a look at the current OCEAN TEMPERATURES off of Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula. And for a quick glance at the current weather the NOAA SATELLITE PHOTO will give you a head's up on today's weather.

For a quick look at the current SATELLITE WEATHER in Mexico visit the NOAA web page.

Cancun offers a host of other amenties for fishermen looking for a way to enjoy their vacation after a full day of fishing. For additional information on Cancun visit the CANCUN EXPO web site.
